Position Summary/Objective: The Minnesota Timberwolves are looking to hire one Basketball Communications Associate, a seasonal position that will run from September 14 through the end of the 2026-27 season. The position is an opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the professional sports communications field. This person will interact on a daily basis with members of the media as well as various departments within the Timberwolves organization to assist with the overall communications efforts of the team. The position involves a large workload and unusual work hours, as well as substantial evening and weekend work.

Essential Functions
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform these essential functions:

Assist Timberwolves Basketball Communications staff in all facets of the team’s communications efforts.
Assist with media monitoring to track and evaluate the team’s media coverage through its media monitoring system.
Assist the department with game notes, visiting media packets, gameday statistical materials, gameday media hospitality and gameday media operations.
Occasionally assist with department publications such as press releases, advisories and other written materials.
Update and manage the Timberwolves media website on a daily basis.
Assist with creating and providing media with credentials, as well as providing media and teams with statistical and press content.
Archive articles and completion of story pitches throughout the season.
Assist with any postgame events that may occur during Timberwolves home games.
Assist with press conferences, including setting up and welcoming media.
Transcribe quotes on game nights for media.
Regularly attend practices and shootarounds to assist with media interview requests.
Occasionally attend appearances with players, coaches and staff (to media venues and in the community).
Staff visiting team shootarounds to assist visiting public relations staff and media members.
Assist with departmental administrative tasks as assigned.
Handle confidential information in a professional manner.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other:

Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
Strong basketball statistical knowledge required.
Computer skills required: experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe InDesign is preferred.
Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
Ability to work well on a team and independently.
Ability to manage specific processes and tasks in the department under supervision.

Experience: Communications background, including Public Relations, Journalism, and/or sports information/sports PR experience is preferred.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications or equivalent experience preferred.

Compensation & Benefits:

Hourly rate: $22/hour
Additional perks/benefits include free parking and one free game night meal.

Supervisory Responsibility, if any: This position does not have supervisory responsibility

Work Environment
This job operates during Timberwolves home games. Work is both sedentary and active in nature. The position operates out of an administrative office and a sports arena. The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by dust, etc. The noise level is loud during events. During events work is generally performed on the main court, around the concourse and bleachers/steps, as well as in an office environment.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange information with others both in person and over the telephone. The employee frequently is required to remain in a stationary position, as well as operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer and telephone. The employee may remain in stationary position for periods of time and is frequently required to ascend and descend bleachers/steps and traverse quickly around the arena on event days and potentially non-event days. Staff will frequently move boxes and equipment each game night weighing up to 30 pounds.

Travel
Position may require travel to external events.
