Full Job Description

Della Lamb Community Services exists to empower its clients to meet the challenges of education, employment, and self-sufficiency in an ever-changing world. Della Lamb is a National Mission Institution in a covenant relationship with the United Women in Faith and an agency member of the United Way of Greater Kansas City. Della Lamb is one of two refugee resettlement agencies in Kansas City, offers licensed and accredited early education services to children and families from low-income and ELL backgrounds, and provides youth sports to primarily low-income families. We are striving to be a city of welcome, honoring the dignity of every individual. We are hopeful to launch Therapeutic Services to directly invest in the mental and social-emotional health of our program participants.

Della Lamb’s Therapeutic Services seeks to be culturally responsive, highly relational, and characterized by hope and patience. This position will launch Della Lamb’s entry into Therapeutic Services, and the right candidate will carry an entrepreneurial spirit, a curiosity to learn culturally responsive care, and an innovative approach to build confidence in children and youth. The Therapeutic Services Program Manager will collaboratively work with Della Lamb’s executive and programmatic leadership to develop, launch, and provide individual and group therapeutic services in response to cultural dynamics and the community integration process.

Job Overview:
As a Child and Youth Therapist, you will be responsible for providing culturally sensitive and trauma-informed mental health support to children and adolescents across Della Lamb’s program, with anticipated emphasis on children and youth who are refugees or immigrants. Your role will involve assessing and addressing the unique emotional, psychological, and social needs of children and youth who have experienced displacement, persecution, acculturation challenges, and other factors associated with adverse childhood experiences. Working within a multicultural context, you will collaborate with Della Lamb leadership and community organizations to facilitate the healing and integration process for these individuals and their families.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Assessment Services:
o Conduct assessments of children and youth to identify trauma-related symptoms, mental health concerns, and cultural factors influencing their well-being.
o Develop individualized and group treatment plans tailored to the specific needs and strengths of each person.

2. Therapeutic Interventions:
o Provide individual and group therapy sessions to address trauma, anxiety, depression, acculturation stress, and other mental health issues commonly experienced by refugee and immigrant children and youth.
o Utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, play therapy, art therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches, to promote emotional healing and resilience.

3. Cultural Competence and Sensitivity:
o Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the cultural, religious, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds of Kansas City’s newest neighbors.
o Adapt therapeutic interventions to respect and honor clients' cultural beliefs, values, and traditions, while also addressing acculturation challenges and fostering a sense of belonging in the new environment.
o Partner with interpreters to overcome language barriers.

4. Collaboration and Advocacy:
o Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams, including social workers, case managers, educators, and medical professionals, to ensure comprehensive care and support for children/youth and their families.
o Cultivate collaborative relationships with colleagues, other non-profits, schools, and other entities to identify those children and youth in need of services.

5. Social-Emotional and Skill Building:
o Facilitate workshops and support groups for children and youth to provide health gathering spaces, covering topics such as stress management, conflict resolution, cultural adjustment, and self-care strategies.
o Empower clients to develop coping skills, build resilience, and navigate challenges related to their refugee or immigrant experiences.

6. Empower and Support Team Members:
o Manage and coordinate efforts of team members to invest in children and youth.
o Ensure Therapeutic Services team members are developing culturally responsive individual and group sessions.

7. Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field preferred. LCSW strongly preferred.
Specialized training or certification in trauma-focused therapy, refugee mental health, cross-cultural counseling, or related areas is highly desirable.
Experience working with refugee and immigrant populations, preferably in a mental health or social services setting.
Fluency in languages commonly spoken by refugee and immigrant communities served by the organization (if applicable).
Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and cultural competence.
Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse team and with external partners.
Commitment to social justice, human rights, and trauma-informed care principles.

Work Environment: Team members will strive to overcome logistical challenges and improve accessibility to services by providing therapeutic services at locations familiar and accessible to participants. The work may involve office-based therapy sessions, home visits, school consultations, and outreach activities within the local community. Flexibility in scheduling may be required to accommodate the needs of clients and families, including some evenings and weekends.
