POSITION PURPOSE
The Cost Accountant supports accurate and timely financial reporting with a primary focus on cost accounting, inventory accounting, product costing, and manufacturing operations. This position performs account reconciliations, journal entries, inventory valuation and variance analysis, standard cost maintenance, and financial reporting in support of month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities. This individual also partners with Finance, Operations, and Procurement to understand cost drivers, improve reporting accuracy, support budgeting and audit activities, and identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements. The Cost Accountant will also be responsible for applying all internal guidelines in a fair and consistent manner and contributing to a positive team atmosphere.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB DUTIES
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- 4+ years of relevant experience in accounting, cost accounting, manufacturing finance, supply chain finance, or a related area
- Experience with inventory accounting, product costing, standard costs, bills of material, and manufacturing operations
- Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, financial schedules, and variance analyses.
- Working knowledge of inventory valuation, COGS, gross margin, PPV, and manufacturing variances.
- Experience with ERP systems; SAP experience is highly desired
- Extensive working knowledge of PC functions and Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally
- Experience with fixed assets, capital projects, budgeting, forecasting, or audit support is preferred
- CMA certification and experience using AI-powered or automated reporting tools are a plus
JOB DUTIES:
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities related to cost accounting, inventory, and general accounting, including preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, supporting schedules, and related documentation.
- Review profit-and-loss and balance-sheet accounts to ensure transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with company accounting policies and procedures.
- Research, resolve, and document accounting, reconciliation, and financial reporting issues and provide explanations for account activity and significant variances.
- Perform inventory reconciliations and valuation analyses, including analyses of inventory reserves, shelf-life adjustments, write-offs, in-transit inventory, supplier claims, and customer returns.
- Analyze inventory, cost of goods sold, gross margin, purchase price variances, and other manufacturing variances and clearly communicate significant fluctuations and underlying cost drivers.
- Review and maintain bills of material and standard costs to support accurate product costing and inventory valuation.
- Process standard cost updates, cost rolls, and freight and tariff allocations and investigate unusual or inaccurate costing results.
- Support fixed asset and capital project accounting activities, including asset tracking, capitalization reviews, project spending analyses, depreciation schedules, and maintenance of supporting records.
- Prepare monthly financial and operational reports related to inventory, scrap, customer returns, fixed assets, and manufacturing operations.
- Develop spreadsheet reports, verify data accuracy, research financial and operational variances, and prepare ad hoc analyses using Excel and other reporting tools.
- Assist with the preparation and monitoring of annual operating budgets and expense forecasts.
- Support cost center owners in reviewing actual-versus-budget results, investigating significant variances, and preparing corrections or reclassifications when necessary.
- Partner with Operations, Procurement, and Finance to understand material, labor, freight, tariff, and overhead cost drivers and support cost-saving and process-improvement initiatives.
- Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, retrieving supporting documentation, responding to audit requests, and providing explanations for account activity and variances.
- Review employee expense reports, travel and expense submissions, and corporate credit card transactions for proper coding, approval, supporting documentation, and compliance with company policies.
- Follow established internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures to support accurate financial reporting and regulatory compliance.
- Utilize AI-powered tools to streamline daily business processes, automate routine activities, enhance financial and operational analysis, and improve reporting accuracy, efficiency, and decision-making.
- Support system enhancements, special projects, process improvements, and other Finance initiatives as assigned.
- Safeguard confidential financial, employee, supplier, customer, and company information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75% of the time.
- Must be able to bend, climb stairs, and continuously stand or walk 25% of the time.

- Must be able to lift 10-20 pounds (for example: packages, copy paper boxes, etc.)
- Must be able to communicate effectively by listening and in both written and verbal forms.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Generally, works in an office environment but may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting.
- This position regularly requires large amounts of time to be spent using and viewing computer screens and equipment, which generally entails regular and repetitive motions.
- May occasionally be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or chemicals. All safety procedures should be adhered to in each of these situations.

Compensation for the role will depend on several factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience, and may fall outside of the range provided. The compensation range listed above may encompass base salary, performance-based bonuses, and commission opportunities, if applicable.
