Full Job Description

Job Purpose: The primary role of the Director of Community Initiatives and Partnerships (“Director”) is to lead community engagement efforts for the Foundation and provide cohesion for the development and implementation of community-wide strategies that address the Community Foundation for Monterey County’s (CFMC) goals. The Director brings a learning and growth mindset to managing CFMC initiatives. The Director will leverage various forms of data and relationships to further CFMC’s goals. In addition, they will implement a strategic and cohesive plan for advancing the CFMC’s success and expand the Foundation’s community impact based on an understanding of community needs, resources, and a strong network of community relationships and partnerships. The Director reports to the Vice President of Community Impact (VPCI) and works side by side with the President/CEO. At times the Director will serve as a proxy in place of the President/CEO in community settings. This is a full-time, exempt position. Classification is based on the position’s duties and applicable wage-and-hour requirements.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Community Leadership: Develop and maintain expertise and networks for community issues, including emerging and longstanding issues. Potentially: public health, disaster relief and response, affordable housing, workforce and other community-wide issues. Represent the CFMC in the community, provide engagement and community leadership support to inform CFMC’s strategic directions. Communicate and refine the Foundation’s programmatic strategy to ensure alignment with CFMC’s mission and vision.
Special Initiatives: Lead grant-funded initiatives such as the Salinas Inclusive Economic Development Initiative (SIEDI), including direct interaction and oversight of hired consultants and multi-milliondollar budgets. Other initiatives may include partnerships with public entities (most often the County of Monterey) that include oversight of programs and budgets. All initiatives have budget accountability to the funding agency.
Supervision: Supervise and manage the Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) Manager. Provide coaching, performance feedback, and professional development while fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment. Oversee the work of interns, volunteers, and independent contractors, as needed.
Networking and Collaboration: Serve as a convener and facilitator to stimulate and promote collaborations to address emerging needs and opportunities within the CFMC’s priority impact areas. Lead and support efforts to identify and establish partnerships and community investment opportunities.
Meeting Facilitation: Responsible for staffing committees/groups comprised of community representatives, CFMC Board and staff and other stakeholders as needed. Duties include coordination of meetings, managing information gathering, facilitating any recommendation processes, preparing meeting agendas and minutes, analyzing issues and other information to support committee work.
Community Relations: Work directly with nonprofits, businesses, government organizations, and community leaders to align resources, network and share ideas for community priorities and initiatives. Represent the Foundation on boards and commissions where needed.
Foundation Relations: Educate CFMC staff/departments, Board of Directors, foundation committees and volunteers about community initiatives.
Grantmaking (General): As needed, lead proposal review within appropriate areas, including analysis of requests, due diligence, communicating with prospective grantees, preparing docket materials for grant committee, correspondence, and entering and maintaining information on CFMC’s grants database. Monitor progress of grants, evaluate organizations’ success, and assess impact of grants.
Accountability: Work as a member of the CFMC team to ensure that projects and initiatives are responsive to community needs and that operations are efficient and effective.
Public Relations: Represent the Community Foundation for Monterey County at multi-agency collaboratives, networks, and/or other work-related convening(s).
Program Administration and Staff Support: Perform any and all other program-related administrative duties as required from time to time or as assigned by the Vice President of Community Impact or the President/CEO.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree is preferred; with some advanced coursework in a related field preferred.
A minimum of five years’ experience in nonprofit and/or public sector institutions, with at least three serving in a professional or management role.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to serve as an effective and inspiring spokesperson and representative of CFMC, build shared understanding of the Foundation’s work internally, and increase CFMC’s external visibility.
Ability to prepare and give presentations and comfortably interact with diverse audiences.
High level of self-awareness and ability to build and maintain strong relationships internally and externally. Strong analytic, interpersonal and networking skills. Ability to interact with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
Team-oriented with an ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues, board members, consultants and community leaders from diverse backgrounds. Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and work independently.
Passion and commitment to CFMC’s mission and community leadership. Demonstrated commitment to the community with action-oriented approach and ability to work productively with diverse groups and individuals from many sectors.
Ability to facilitate meetings and group processes for fact-finding, decision-making, peer learning and problem solving.
Professional verbal and written Spanish proficiency is highly desirable. Experience working effectively and respectfully with culturally and linguistically diverse communities is strongly preferred.
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database applications.
Reliable transportation is required for regular travel throughout Monterey County. Ability to travel throughout Monterey County for site visits, community engagement, and meetings. When driving is required, the employee must possess a valid driver’s license and meet CFMC’s applicable insurance requirements.
Prior grantmaking experience is not a requirement; however, experience with program/project development and evaluation is highly desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. The position primarily involves office and computer-based work, frequent communication, attendance at meetings and community events, and occasional lifting or carrying of materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Annual salary range of $105,000 to $115,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
