JOB SUMMARY
This position is a key middle management role and services as an advisor to the Chief, the Super Chief, and the Director of Facilities. The Assistant Chief will observe and report on personal and departmental needs. They will assist in developing operational procedures, equipment operations, scheduling labor, inventory control and maintenance procedures. An Assistant Chief will be responsible for driving departmental projects under the direction of the Chief Engineer, the Super Chief, and the Director of Facilities. The Assistant Chief must have both leadership and engineering experience.
The responsibilities of an Assistant Chief Engineer are to direct the crew when the Director of Facilities, the Super Chief Engineer and the Chief Engineer are not available.
The Assistant Chief will often be totally on his own without anyone else on site with whom to confer. While on property, he might also be the lead man on site, directing the work force would be a portion of his responsibilities as well as preforming refrigeration work himself. This position’s main function is to do higher level or major maintenance and make repairs and modifications to equipment as assigned by the Director of Facilities. Refrigeration set-up and tear down are also a major portion of the Assistant Chief Engineer responsibilities. Such equipment might include, but not be limited to condensers, ice generators, ice machines, ice plates and condenser coils. This individual will work on projects and be task driven. An Assistant Chief Engineer will need to be able to work alone, analyze a problem, determine the best course of action, secure materials needed to remedy the problem and complete the repair. When necessary, the Assistant Chief will perform any duties, usually the responsibility of the Watch/Maintenance Engineer, the Lead Refrigeration Tech, or the Traveling Lead Refrigeration Tech.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
An Assistant Chief Engineer will make repairs as assigned by the Director of Facilities, or any Refrigeration crew member who maintains a higher job classification, on a project or task basis, maintain equipment and services complete projects and tasks as assigned, using his best judgement as to the appropriate course of action.
· Secure needed materials and supplies.
· Direct the refrigeration crew in the absence of the Director of Facilities, the Super Chief Engineer and the Chief Engineer
· Follow all necessary safety steps, including but not limited to Lock-out Tag-out procedures.

An Assistant Chief Engineer will make repairs as assigned by the Director of Facilities on a project or task basis. maintain equipment and services per the direction of the Director of Facilities 100% of the time. The Assistant Chief Engineer must meet minimum standards established and communicated by the Director of Facilities. Standards will be reviewed and may be adjusted based on operational requirements. The Assistant Chief Engineer will do their work in such a manner to be viewed as a credible leader by all levels of the organization, including front-line team members. Make all company time, productive time.

Maintain high standards regarding the entire scope of their work, including attentiveness to accuracy in repairs being made, courteous and respectful treatment of customers, maintaining a clean and sanitary facility and care and attention to the use of all equipment. Timeliness
Meet job requirements in a timely manner as specified by the Director of Facilities, or any Refrigeration crew member who maintains a higher job classification or the General Manager.
Qualification Requirements:
Education and Training
· High School education or equivalent, Refrigeration training
· Minimum of 6 years of Refrigeration experience
· RETA certification – either CARO or CIRO level or equivalent
· Forklift training and have an operator’s license (or be able to qualify for an operator’s license)
Language Skills
Must have the ability to read and comprehend somewhat complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos, and be able to effectively respond to and communicate with the crew members, other employees, and customers. Also, must be able to respond coherently to basic and in-depth inquiries from Supervisor(s) Management and staff. An Assistant Chief Engineer must be able to assess a situation and communicate his assessment to Supervisors(s) and Management, particularly when he is working off site.
Mathematical Skills
Must have the basic knowledge of arithmetic functions, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions (either written or oral) make observations, communicate with others, and operate assigned equipment safely.
