Full Job Description

Under the direction of a Project Engineer and/or Engineering Manager, oversee a single project that involves the value improvement and value engineering of an existing outdoor power equipment product. This position requires demonstrated creativity in applying CAD design practices and mechanical engineering principles to improve the design and assembly of finished machine products and components.

Project is to be completed within 4-6 weeks, and deliverables will include CAD designs and sketches of revised parts and assemblies. Access to a physical unit, its assembly diagrams, associated BOMs, and 3D CAD parts/assembly will be available. An NDA will need to be signed to ensure protection of sensitive, private, or proprietary information.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDED BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

· Redesign aspects of existing product by adding value to current design, improving assembly productivity, while reducing material costs. Assess and investigate significant cost drivers and develop novel designs to reduce complexity and part count.

· Demonstrated excellence with implementing principles of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) in machine design or industrial applications.

· Proficiency with designing fabrication drawings for parts and assemblies with sheet-metal and weldment components within Solidworks and PDM Vault.

· Comfortable working with vendors and suppliers to drive design reviews to assess significant cost drivers and develop strategies to add value to part design.

· Research and analyze competitive products on market to incorporate alternative design improvements.

· Experience supporting new product development and/or existing product lines.

· Manipulate process assembly documentation and BOMs in both Solidworks CAD and Microsoft Excel.

· Prepares project Status Reports by collecting and summarizing information and prior actions.

· Ensures compliance with Schiller’s engineering and quality policies, procedures, and practices through appropriate communication, training and education of sound quality assurance principles.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Two year technical degree related to this function and 5-10 years of experience in product design or an (mechanical or industrial) engineering degree and atleast 3-5 years of experience.

· Exposure to product design and development of outdoor power equipment running on small gasoline engines

· Excellent Solidworks CAD skills and computer skills (MS Excel).

· Hands-on fabrication, machine assembly, and power tools skills is a big bonus.

· Excellent communications and organizational skills.

· Proficient at problem solving and root cause analysis.

DELIVERABLES AT END OF PROJECT:

· Comprehensive technical data package of revised parts and assemblies that have improved overall value and margin of an existing product. This includes all native Solidworks CAD files, as well as hand-drawn sketches.

· Firm RFQs ideally completed or in WIP with key vendors and suppliers for revised parts and assemblies.

· Analysis of significant cost drivers within current design and assembly
