Qualifications
Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in education, business management, or a social or behavioral science and one year of full-time professional experience in educational instruction or training, behavioral instruction, or working with individuals with disabilities.
Substitution of Education for Experience: One year of qualifying graduate coursework in education, business management, or a social or behavioral science may be substituted for the required experience.
Substitution of Experience for Education: Additional qualifying full-time professional experience as listed above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for- year basis.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants for this class must:

Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority;

Agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointing authority;

Supply a fingerprint sample prescribed by the TBI based criminal history records check;

Overview
The Tennessee Department of Human Services is announcing a vacancy for a Vocational Behavioral Instructor. This position is housed within the Vocational Training Department at the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center in Smyrna and plays a vital role in preparing students with disabilities for meaningful employment and greater independence. The Vocational Behavioral Instructor supports TRC students both in the classroom and through virtual delivery by providing individualized instruction, behavioral guidance, and essential work readiness and computer skills training.
This position serves as an instructor, mentor, and behavioral support specialist, helping adult learners build appropriate work behaviors, develop work ready social skills, and gain hands on experience in the vocational field of their choice. The role includes creating curriculum, delivering structured instruction, monitoring progress, and maintaining supportive communication in a manner accessible to each student. The Vocational Behavioral Instructor also works closely with a multidisciplinary team, including Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors, Area of Study Instructors, Business Employment Consultants, and statewide partners, to align training with student goals and ensure appropriate interventions and behavior support plans are implemented.
By modeling professionalism, providing consistent structure, and adapting instructional methods to meet individual needs, the Vocational Behavioral Instructor strengthens each student's ability to succeed in training and employment settings. This position is central to TRC's mission of empowering individuals with disabilities to achieve their highest level of independence through high quality, person centered vocational training and support.
Responsibilities

Provides instruction to students and participants focused on social/emotional support classes, employment skills, appropriate work behavior/attitudes and academic preparation courses for their area of study.

Develops and revises curriculum to teach students at a level in line with current job trends and identifies the training needs of students and participants.

Individualizes work activities and tasks to accommodate the abilities of each student to enhance self-sufficiency and independence for transition into the community. Directs or provides oversight and training to students and employers during internships and may accompany students to the internship site to meet with partners or provide job coaching.

Prepares a variety of records and reports such as daily attendance records, progress reports, and behavioral documentation.

Actively participates in meetings, events, committees, and maintains open communication across campus and with other vocational rehabilitation staff. Establishes and maintains business relationships throughout the state to partner in the creation of student employment opportunities.

Meets with students, participants, colleagues, counselors and/or individual supports and gathers information to address any conduct concerns.
- Provides training to students on employment readiness skills such as resume writing, interview techniques, job application processes, and effective job search strategies to support their successful entry into the workforce.

Assists students in identifying internship opportunities that align with their employment goals, establishes internship parameters, and completes internship packets with the partnering business. Directs or provides oversight and training to students and employers during internships and may accompany students to the internship site to meet with partners or provide job coaching.
