Position Title: Classroom Aide (Special Education)
Reports To: Classroom Teacher and Program Administrator
Employment Type: Full‑time, 10‑month (student days), with the option of ESY in the Summer

KBS Academy provides a private K‑3 Autistic Support program and a K‑12 alternative placement program grounded in trauma‑assumed, compassion‑based Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Role Summary

The Classroom Aide supports classroom teachers and students with special needs, ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment. Aides help implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), assist with daily instruction, monitor behavior and provide personal care as need They work closely with teachers, therapists and families to promote student independence and academic success.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Support
Prepare and adapt classroom activities and materials under teacher direction, and assist with administering tests and homework to reinforce learning objectives.
Work with small groups or individual students who need additional help.
Prepare visual charts, reminders and prompts, and gradually fade assistance as students gain independence.
Re‑teach material under teacher guidance and help document student progress.
Classroom Management & Record Keeping
Monitor student behavior and keep accurate records to support teacher planning and IEP implementation.
Help set up the classroom for lessons and maintain a tidy, welcoming environment.
Grade homework or quizzes as assigned and assist with organization and filing of student work.
Supervise group activities, field trips, lunch and recess, ensuring that safety protocols and behavioral expectations are followed..
Behavioral & Social Support
Implement behavior support plans and assist students in managing challenging behaviors using positive reinforcement and de‑escalation strategies.
Facilitate social interaction and encourage friendships among peers.
Maintain awareness of each student’s sensory and communication needs and support the use of alternative communication methods.
Personal Care & Life Skills
Assist with toileting, feeding, hygiene and mobility, ensuring each student’s dignity and comfort.
Support daily functional life skills (e.g., eating, toileting, grooming) to improve independence and quality of life.
Safely escort students to and from buses, restrooms and other school areas.
Team Collaboration
Communicate observations and progress to teachers, therapists and parents as appropriate.
Participate in staff meetings, IEP meetings and professional development sessions to stay informed about student needs and best practices.
Foster a positive, cooperative relationship with all staff and contribute to a culture of respect and teamwork.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required
Experience: Experience working with children with autism or special needs in educational or care settings is strongly preferred.
Skills & Traits:
Knowledge of basic classroom management techniques and willingness to learn Applied Behavior Analysis and trauma‑informed practices.
Patience, compassion and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with teachers, students and families.
Flexibility and adaptability; ability to respond to changing schedules and student needs.
Physical ability to perform duties such as lifting up to 50 lbs., kneeling, or stooping

Additional Information

This role follows the school calendar and may require participation in professional development and training days.
Employment is contingent upon background checks and completion of mandatory training.
