Job Description
The Batch Maker II is responsible for safely and efficiently manufacturing chemical batches according to established formulas, quality standards, regulatory requirements and standard operating procedures. The Batch Maker II troubleshoots process issues, supports continuous improvement, and serves as a resource for other batch makers. This role ensures the integrity of raw materials, equipment, documentation, and final product quality while maintaining compliance with internal procedures, customer specifications, and applicable regulations.
Duties & Responsibilities
· Independently set up, operate, and monitor tanks, mixers, pumps, scales and gages
· Accurately weigh, measure, and add raw materials in accordance with batch sheets, formulas, and safety guidelines.
· Perform tank and mixer sanitization processes per standard operating procedures (SOP’s)
· Train to monitor purified water system which includes daily readings and sanitization
· Adjust process parameters such as temperature, agitation, and mixing time to ensure optimal batch performance.
· Perform in-process testing, record results, and make necessary adjustments to meet specifications.
· Ensure timely and accurate completion of production logs, batch documentation, and deviation notes.
· Promotes safety standards, proper PPE use, and hazard awareness.
· Supports Quality Control by collecting samples, reviewing test data, and troubleshooting product deviations.
· Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements as well as internal SOPs and GMP guidelines (as applicable).
· Lead root-cause investigations for process deviations and collaborate with Quality to implement corrective actions.
· Ensure equipment and work areas are cleaned, sanitized, and maintained according to standards.
· Provide on-the-job training, guidance, and mentorship to other batch makers.
· Demonstrate best practices in batch preparation, documentation, and safety procedures.
· Assist the Production Supervisor in coordinating daily workflow, prioritizing tasks, and communicating production status.
· Identify opportunities for process improvements, waste reduction, and operational efficiencies.
· Participate in scale-ups, process validations, and new product introductions.
· Assist with troubleshooting equipment and coordinate with maintenance when needed.
· Provide technical input on batch sheet revisions, process controls, and raw material evaluations.
· Verify raw material identity, lot numbers, and quality before use.
· Coordinate material staging, label usage, and tank storage with warehouse personnel.
· Supports tracking material usage and report shortages or discrepancies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Strong understanding of chemical handling, mixing operations, and industrial safety protocols.
· Ability to read and interpret batch sheets, SOPs, and technical documents.
· Proficiency with scales, meters, temperature control systems, and material transfer equipment.
· Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and mechanical aptitude.
· Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work on feet for extended periods, and operate in a hot or cold industrial environment.
· Ability to read and write English to complete batch record documentation
· Ability to do simple math: division, multiplication, sum, minus
· Knowledge of measurement conversions (powders, liquids)
Qualifications
· High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training preferred.
· 7+ years of experience as a Chemical Batch Maker, Chemical Operator, or similar role in an FDA regulated manufacturing environment.
· Forklift sit down certification or experience, willing to obtain certification required.
Working Condition
The Batch Maker II works in a chemical manufacturing environment that includes both production-floor and warehouse settings. The role requires frequent physical activity, including lifting, carrying, bending, and standing for extended periods. The work area may involve elevated temperatures due to heated process equipment, steam, and active batch reactions, and seasonal heat may contribute to a warm or hot environment. The position also involves routine handling of chemicals, powders, and liquid raw materials, requiring strict adherence to PPE requirements such as gloves, goggles, face shields, respirators (as applicable), chemical-resistant clothing, and safety footwear.
Employees must be able to navigate around tanks, mixers, hoses, pumps, and other processing equipment, sometimes in wet or slippery areas. The environment may include exposure to fumes, vapors, and odors associated with chemical processes, as well as moderate to loud noise levels. Proper ventilation, safety protocols, and engineering controls are in place to maintain regulatory compliance and promote employee safety. Occasional climbing of ladders, working at heights, and operating forklifts or material-handling equipment may be required.
The role does and will require overtime, shift work, and weekend work.
