HurtVet Fire & Security, an award-winning Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) with contracts nationwide in multiple locations across the U.S., is seeking a Project Manager / Fire Alarm Subject Matter Expert (SME) to join our operations team. This is a unique opportunity for a fire alarm professional who wants to combine hands-on technical testing work with growing project management and customer-facing responsibility on federal contracts.
This is a hybrid role, roughly split evenly between on-site fire alarm inspection, testing, and technical oversight duties and remote project management work (scheduling, subcontractor oversight, customer coordination, reporting, and invoicing support). The successful candidate will serve as the on-the-ground fire alarm expert and flagship Project Manager for our local contract, while also self-performing a portion of the annual fire alarm testing and inspection work required under that contract.
Location
This position requires the applicant to live in, or be willing to relocate to, one of the following areas:
- Eastern Massachusetts (near Bedford, MA)
- Tucson, AZ area
Candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of one of the targeted locations, as the role requires regular on-site presence at the local flagship contract site along with periodic travel to other assigned sites within the region as needed.
Position Summary
The Project Manager / Fire Alarm SME acts as both a technical authority and a program manager. On the technical side, this person will self-perform portions of the required annual fire alarm system inspection, testing, and certification work at their local flagship contract (e.g., Bedford MA, or Tucson AZ, depending on assigned location). On the program management side, this person will oversee day-to-day contract performance – managing subcontractors who perform hands-on repair and maintenance work, coordinating with the federal customer, and ensuring the contract is executed on time, in scope, and in compliance with all applicable codes and contract requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Fire Alarm Technical / SME Duties
- Self-perform a portion of required fire alarm system inspection, testing, and maintenance activities (pull stations, detectors, notification devices, panels, batteries, annunciators, etc.) in accordance with NFPA 72, NFPA 25, OSHA, VHA, and Joint Commission (TJC) requirements, as applicable to the assigned contract.
- Serve as the technical subject matter expert on fire alarm systems and code compliance for the local contract, advising both company leadership and the customer on system status, deficiencies, and corrective actions.
- Review and validate subcontractor testing documentation and reports for technical accuracy and code compliance.
- Identify and document areas of non-compliance, working with subcontractors and/or company leadership to develop corrective action plans and timelines.
- Maintain working knowledge of relevant fire alarm control panel platforms and programming environments used at assigned sites (e.g., Edwards EST3/EST4, FireWorks, Simplex, Siemens, Notifier or equivalent).
- Support development of Interim Life Safety Measure (ILSM) plans and fire watch procedures when required by an uncorrected life-safety deficiency.
Project Management Duties
- Serve as the day-to-day Project Manager for the local flagship contract, with responsibility for on-time, in-scope, and compliant contract performance.
- Schedule and manage subcontractors performing hands-on testing, maintenance, and repair work; confirm work is performed within the defined scope of the contract.
- Serve as a primary point of contact with the federal customer (e.g., Contracting Officer's Representative/COR, Safety Office, Engineering) for day-to-day coordination, scheduling, and issue resolution.
- Gather and review subcontractor and vendor quotes for repairs, replacements, and out-of-scope work; support pricing and change-order documentation.
- Track deficiencies, corrective actions, and unique identifiers required under the contract's reporting and quality assurance requirements.
- Coordinate with company finance/accounting staff to confirm completed activities and progress milestones, and communicate when invoicing or progress payments can be submitted.
- Maintain accurate contract records, inventory lists, and compliance documentation (digital inventory lists, deficiency logs, training records, certifications, etc.).
- Support monthly and semi-annual customer meetings, reporting, and deliverable submissions as required by the contract.
Additional Duties

- Maintain and update relevant personnel certifications and training records (NICET, factory training, OSHA, etc.) as required by contract.
- Assist company leadership with go/no-go and pricing input for similarly scoped fire alarm and life safety opportunities in the assigned region.
- Cultivate strong, lasting relationships with customers, subcontractors, and teammates to support the long-term health of the contract and the business.
- Other duties as assigned.
