Compensation: $20.50/hour
Position Summary: The stagehand will work at the Martin Center for Nashville Ballet in the warehouse and in the studios on projects such as recitals, shows, maintenance, scenic building, and lighting preparation.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Warehouse Operations & Inventory
- Assist with the organization, maintenance, and operation of the production warehouse.
- Load, unload, transport, and store scenery, lighting equipment, soft goods, props, and production materials.
- Under the direction of the Assistant Technical Director, maintain organized storage systems and assist with inventory tracking of scenery, lighting equipment, and production assets.
- Prepare equipment, scenery, and materials for rehearsals, performances, rentals, and special events.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient warehouse environment.
Scenery & Stage Operations
- Assist with the construction, installation, maintenance, repair, and strike of scenic elements.
- Load in, install, and remove scenery for productions, rehearsals, and special events.
- Operate hand and power tools safely while assisting with scenic fabrication and repairs.
- Assist with stage changeovers and backstage support during technical rehearsals and performances as assigned.
- Ensure scenic elements are safely secured, maintained, and stored following each production.
Lighting Support
- Assist with the installation, focus, maintenance, and strike of lighting systems and equipment.
- Prepare lighting equipment, cables, accessories, and expendables for productions and events according to production paperwork.
- Assist with routine maintenance, cleaning, testing, and repair of lighting fixtures and related equipment.
- Support lighting inventory management and ensure equipment is properly stored and maintained.
- Assist with lighting hang and focus calls under the supervision of the Master Electrician or Assistant Technical Director.
Production Support
- Assist with load-ins, load-outs, rehearsals, performances, and special events as assigned.
- Provide general technical support for production departments including scenery, lighting, props, and staging.
- Operate production equipment and assist with technical tasks under the direction of production supervisors.
- Support efficient execution of production schedules by completing assigned tasks safely and on time.
Safety & Facility Maintenance
- Follow all safety policies and procedures while working in the warehouse, studios, theaters, and performance venues.
- Operate ladders, lifts, carts, and other equipment safely and in accordance with organizational policies.
- Perform routine inspections of scenery, lighting equipment, tools, and warehouse facilities.
- Report damaged equipment, maintenance needs, or safety concerns promptly.
- Maintain clean and organized workspaces in the warehouse, scene shop, stage, and backstage areas.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with the Assistant Technical Director, Master Electrician, Production staff, artistic staff, and fellow crew members.
- Communicate project status, equipment needs, and scheduling concerns in a timely manner.
- Support a positive, professional, and collaborative production environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Production Department.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Ability to safely lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding work throughout the day.
- Experience with or willingness to learn scenic construction, theatrical lighting equipment, and warehouse operations.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, personnel lifts, and material handling equipment.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail in inventory management and equipment storage.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative production team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing production priorities.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
- Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and flexible hours as required by the production schedule.
Dependability/Punctuality: Must be reliable and have a commitment to punctuality. Must be able to work flexible shifts, including some nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on rehearsal, performance, and event schedules. Hours vary based on season needs. Must extend courtesy, friendliness, and overall respect to all the above. This role will collaborate with other staff and/or departments. Attention to detail is extremely important for this position.
