Sustainability Intern / Co-op – PV Design & Building Sustainability
Ettinger Engineering Associates is a premier MEP/FP, civil, low voltage, and sustainability consulting engineering firm located in Midtown Manhattan. We are seeking a motivated Sustainability Intern / Co-op with 0–18 months of experience to support our growing Sustainability Department. This is an ideal opportunity for a recent graduate, current undergraduate student, graduate student, or early-career professional interested in building sustainability, solar photovoltaic design, energy efficiency, high-performance buildings, and green building certification programs.
The role will focus primarily on solar PV design and technical support, while also providing exposure to a wide range of sustainability programs and project types, including ENERGY STAR, Enterprise Green Communities, LEED, Passive House, Fitwel, commissioning, field verification, energy analysis, and related incentive / compliance programs.
Responsibilities
With guidance from senior staff, responsibilities may include:
- Support preliminary and detailed solar PV design, including roof layout studies, production assumptions, equipment coordination, basic single-line / system layout support, and coordination with internal MEP teams.
- Assist with review of architectural, MEP, civil, and sustainability drawings for compliance with program requirements.
- Support documentation for green building and energy efficiency programs, including ENERGY STAR, Enterprise Green Communities, LEED, Passive House, Fitwel, NYSERDA programs, and other applicable standards.
- Prepare and maintain credit documentation, checklists, compliance trackers, calculations, and internal project files.
- Assist with basic technical calculations related to energy efficiency, solar PV, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, materials, site measures, and other sustainability requirements.
- Help review project drawings, specifications, submittals, and supporting documentation for consistency with sustainability goals and certification requirements.
- Perform research and data analysis to support design decisions, program compliance, benchmarking, incentive applications, and sustainability reports.
- Assist senior staff with energy modeling support, field verification support, commissioning support, inspection documentation, and project closeout materials as needed.
- Coordinate with internal MEP, civil, low voltage, commissioning, and field verification teams to help integrate sustainability requirements into active design and construction projects.
- Participate in project meetings, internal coordination, and team training opportunities as appropriate.
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have:
- Bachelor’s degree completed or in progress in a related field, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, architecture, energy management, building science, sustainability, environmental studies, or a related technical discipline.
- 0–18 months of relevant internship, co-op, academic, or professional experience.
- Strong interest in solar PV design, building sustainability, energy efficiency, and high-performance buildings.
- Ability to read and learn from architectural / engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
- Strong attention to detail, especially with calculations, documentation, and program tracking.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office / Google Workspace.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, PVWatts, Helioscope, Aurora, energy modeling tools, or sustainability certification platforms is a plus, but not required.
- Prior exposure to LEED, ENERGY STAR, Enterprise Green Communities, Passive House, Fitwel, NYSERDA programs, commissioning, or field inspections is a plus.
- Willingness to learn, ask questions, take direction, and grow within a technical consulting environment.
- Candidate must be authorized to work in the United States.
This position may be structured as full-time, part-time, internship, or co-op, depending on candidate availability and business needs.
