Full Job Description

We are a small company that makes education and outreach materials located in Tappan, NY named The Education & Outreach Company. We are biased, but we are pretty sure the company is a wonderful place to work. We make coloring books, playing cards, and a massive variety of innovative, interactive health education products (check out healthedco.com to see what we mean). And let's be honest, saying you spend your days designing and crafting interactive fabric models is pretty cool.

We have a unique, highly creative role that requires a superstar industrial sewist/maker to bring educational products to life. If you look at our health education line, we make everything from highly flexible, handmade cloth pelvic models and plush organ displays to interactive fabric demonstration sets. This isn't a mindless, repetitive factory line assembly job—we need someone with a builder's mindset who can take a concept, cut the material, pattern it out, and stitch it into a masterpiece.

Some basics about why the job is unique and great:

We make meaningful, hands-on things. From standard stitched educational items to highly specialized cloth anatomical and childbirth models, our products change how people learn about health.
We need a design partner, not just an operator. We need you on the industrial sewing machine creating high-quality products, but we also want your brain. You will actively help us look at existing products, figure out how to improve them, and prototype/envision entirely new designs. You are the creative link between a cool idea and a physical product.
You will have a voice. You will have input in the warehouse production and design decisions on things that no big, stuffy company would ever allow you to do. The senior members of our team all started in this type of role and grew into larger positions within the company. We want the person we hire to learn, innovate, and grow with us.
We understand that people have lives outside the office. We work hard to put in place processes that allow us to get our jobs done without our lives being taken over by the job. No one who works here misses a school concert, graduation, or other major life event because of their job.
We aren’t big on stress. We expect you to work efficiently, but we focus on open communication, iterative prototyping, and getting things done right the first go-around.

Now, let’s talk about the job requirements:

You get joy out of making things from scratch. You love the process of pattern making, cut-and-sew, and watching raw material become a 3D object.
You nail down the details. You don’t need to race blindly through warehouse quotas. Because our models require precision (and sometimes flexibility to simulate real-world functions), we need you to slow things down, think creatively, and get them done right.
You are meticulous but innovative. You care about clean lines, strong seams, and durability, but you also aren't afraid to experiment with fabric choices or construction techniques to make a product better.
Professional, but not formal. Our company culture is relaxed, but we do expect professionalism and punctuality. If we hire you, it’s because we trust you to take ownership of the cut-and-sew table.
Intelligence, creative energy, and a "get-it-done" attitude. When you hit a snag trying to figure out how to transition a pattern, you'll find our team is happy to brainstorm and help find answers.

Finally, exactly what you would be doing:

Operate industrial sewing equipment to cut and sew fabric models, educational materials, and plush interactive products.
Iterate and improve existing fabric designs for manufacturing efficiency, quality, and realistic functionality.
Collaborate on R&D by prototyping and testing out brand-new product concepts.
Ensure strict quality control across all sewn warehouse products and materials.
Lend a hand on other warehouse projects from time to time. We are a small company—sometimes everyone needs to pitch in to get a big shipment out the door.
