Full Job Description

Overview

Join our dedicated Legal Aid Society Appeals Bureau as a Paralegal and play a vital role in supporting complex legal cases through meticulous research, case management, and client communication. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to justice initiatives by assisting attorneys with appellate work across diverse areas of law. Your expertise will help ensure that legal processes are handled efficiently, accurately, and with the utmost professionalism. Duties:

In addition to other support directed by the Appeals Bureau Chief and/or the Deputy Bureau Chief, the Appeals Paralegal shall:

§* Provide administrative support to all Appeals Bureau attorneys*

§* Effectively communicate with clients (including those who are incarcerated), attorneys and support staff*

§* Manage each appellate file with specific focus on the meticulous gathering of all discovery and trial court documents, including all trial, hearing, plea/sentence transcripts and court orders to build a comprehensive appellate record*

§* Work with County Court, District Court and/or Family Court attorneys, both inside and outside the Legal Aid Society, to ensure all documents related to the appeal are provided*

§* Assist appellate attorneys in settling the appellate record, which may include the review of court files and the copying of necessary documents at the offices of the County Clerk, County Court Clerk, District Court and Family Court*

§* Provide critical logistical support to the Appeal Bureau by ensuring seamless client communication throughout the appellate process, including drafting correspondence written under the direct supervision of the assigned appellate attorney or supervisor, and the coordination of in person/virtual meetings or telephone conferences with incarcerated and non-incarcerated clients*

§* Manage calendars, including filing deadlines and scheduling of oral argument in the Appellate Division and Appellate Term. The paralegal will work directly with appellate attorneys and the assigned trial attorney to ensure the timely drafting and filing of Notices of Appeal and Notices of Entry*

§* Assist in the filing of appellate briefs and motions, including electronic submissions, binding and mailing briefs to the court and the District Attorney’s office.*

Pay: $62,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
