Full Job Description

Position Summary: The YWCA Brooklyn seeks a full-time Coordinator of Youth Civic Engagement for its College Access and Leadership Program. The YW LEAD program serves young women of color from poverty-impacted communities attending under-resourced public high schools who will be the first in their families to attend college. The program offers academic support, college inquiry and access, career exploration, financial literacy, leadership development, civic engagement, family support, and college persistence services.

The Coordinator of Youth Civic Engagement is responsible for ensuring all YW LEAD program participants deepen their community service awareness and leadership skills. Using a youth empowerment framework and in collaboration with community partners, the ideal candidate prepares students to identify, research, and address issues to be changemakers in their communities. The Coordinator of Youth Civic Engagement will create opportunities for students to earn community service hours and be competitive college applicants.

Responsibilities:

Design and implement curriculum-based workshops for program participants, focused on advocacy tools, leadership skills, social justice, and community service.
Use a service-learning projects framework to guide students through the process of researching, investigating, planning, and executing year-round community service initiatives.
Coordinate interactive discussions, enrichment opportunities, and trips that increase students’ exposure to social justice and community service work.
Develop partnerships to connect students with community leaders and project partners to support in identifying local issues and creating actionable change.
Plan community engagement opportunities using a social justice framework, ensuring all high school students achieve 100 hours of community service.
Foster and support a safe, confidential, nurturing, inclusive, student-centered environment that celebrates each participant in the program.
Oversee retention and engagement of program participants through regular outreach and one-on-one check-ins with students and families.
Maintain accurate, confidential participant files, attendance, and progress notes, ensuring timely and accurate record keeping.
Plan and implement a summer program with program coordinators that incorporates trips and projects to promote leadership and social justice.
Assist the Director in coordinating events and activities related to economic empowerment, leadership development, civic engagement, and family engagement.
Contribute to grant reporting, program evaluation, and storytelling about program outcomes.
Participate in staff meetings, events, and trainings as an active member of the YW Brooklyn LEAD team.
Perform other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum of 2-3 years’ professional work with youth from diverse socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds
Proven expertise in group facilitation with the ability to lead engaging workshops
Knowledge of service-learning projects, advocacy, and social justice education
Demonstrated ability to create supportive relationships with young people and their families
Understanding of positive youth development framework
Unequivocal passion for closing the achievement and opportunity gap
Self-starter who can work independently and collaboratively in a group, is team-oriented, has a growth mindset and is willing to do what it takes to get the work done
Excellent organization, time management, and exceptional follow-upskills; ability to prioritize
Positive, professional demeanor; excellent judgment and discretion
Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Technologically proficient, especially with Microsoft 365
Previous experience with CRM systems, Apricot preferred
Ability to work a Monday to Friday, 10 am to 6 pm schedule, with one fixed weekday per week with the schedule of 11 am to 7 pm, to be determined by the Director. Occasional evenings and weekends are also required, based on program needs.
