Position Summary
The Estate Planning Attorney will work directly with clients to design and implement comprehensive estate plans tailored to their individual needs and goals. The role requires strong client communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to guide clients through often complex planning decisions.
With the firm’s continued growth, we are expanding our services to meet a rising demand for estate planning. This role will be central to developing and building out this practice area, offering the opportunity to help shape and grow the firm’s estate planning services.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet with clients to assess estate planning needs and goals
- Draft estate planning documents including:
- Wills
- Revocable and irrevocable trusts
- Powers of attorney
- Advance healthcare directives
- Advise clients on strategies for asset protection, probate avoidance, and tax considerations
- Review and update existing estate plans
- Collaborate with firm staff to ensure smooth client intake, document preparation, and execution
- Provide exceptional client service throughout the planning process while maintaining Ellis family law standards of excellence
What Success Looks Like in this Role
Success in this role will be measured by the attorney’s ability to take meaningful ownership of the firm’s developing estate planning practice and help drive its growth. This includes confidently managing client relationships, independently handling matters from initial consultation through drafting and execution, and contributing to the strategic development of this service area. The successful candidate will be proactive in identifying opportunities to expand estate planning services within the firm’s existing client base while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, organization, and professionalism.
This position requires a collaborative mindset, as the attorney will work closely with other lawyers and staff to integrate estate planning into the firm’s broader service offerings. At the same time, the role demands a high level of self-direction, sound judgment, and the ability to operate effectively with limited oversight. Strong attention to detail, efficient case management, and consistent delivery of high-quality work product will be essential indicators of success.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable helping shape workflows, client experience standards, and long-term growth strategy for this practice area.
Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- Licensed and in good standing with the NC State Bar
- 4+ years of Estate Planning experience preferred
- Proven ability to manage high-volume case loads efficiently and independently
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Tech-savvy and comfortable using cloud-based legal practice tools (experience with smokeball a plus)
- Strong work ethic, emotional intelligence, and a team-first mindset
