1 in 5 people in the communities we serve will experience a mental health condition this year. We're looking for someone who can help make sure they and their loved ones know NAMI CCNS is here for them!

About NAMI CCNS

NAMI Cook County North Suburban is a nonprofit affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, serving 17+ communities across Chicago's north suburbs, including Skokie and Glenview. We provide education, support, and advocacy for individuals and families affected by mental illness.

Position Summary

The Outreach & Communications Coordinator is responsible for building NAMI CCNS's public presence and voice — both through direct community relationships and through the content that tells our story. This is a hybrid role: part storyteller/writer, part community connector. The person in this role will create the words and materials that represent NAMI CCNS (social media, newsletters, website copy, event materials, donor and volunteer communications) and, at times, carry those materials into the community through tabling, partnerships, and outreach events.

Reports to: Executive Director

Status: Part time

Location: Hybrid; requires travel across the north suburbs for community events

Key Responsibilities

Content & Communications

Write and design content for social media, email newsletters, and the NAMI CCNS website
Draft marketing and promotional materials for programs (e.g., Family Insight Evenings), fundraising events (e.g., NAMIWalk), and general awareness campaigns
Maintain a consistent organizational voice and visual identity across all public-facing materials
Develop email campaigns and donor/volunteer communications in coordination with the Development Manager
Create simple graphics/flyers for print and digital distribution
Track engagement metrics (social media, email opens/clicks) and adjust content strategy accordingly

Outreach & Community Relations

Represent NAMI CCNS at community events, health fairs, and partner tabling opportunities across the 17+ communities served
Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, schools, libraries, faith communities, and local businesses
Support recruitment for programs and support groups through targeted outreach
Assist with sponsor and participant outreach
Identify and cultivate new partnership and speaking opportunities to expand NAMI CCNS's visibility

General

Support the Executive Director and Development Manager on integrated communications/fundraising campaigns
Maintain an outreach and content calendar
Represent NAMI CCNS's mission, values, and trauma-informed approach in all external communications

Qualifications

2+ years of experience in communications, marketing, or community outreach (nonprofit experience a plus)
Strong writing skills with the ability to adapt tone for different audiences (donors, program participants, community partners)
Hands-on experience with Canva, WordPress, and an email marketing platform (ActiveCampaign experience strongly preferred) or willingness to learn
Confident public presence — comfortable representing the organization one-on-one and in group/tabling settings
Familiarity with or willingness to learn mental health-informed, stigma-free communication practices
Valid driver's license and/or reliable transportation for travel across service area
Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus
Ties to the NAMI CCNS service area are a plus
Lived experience or professional connection to mental health advocacy are a plus

What Success Looks Like in Year One

Consistent, on-brand content published across social media and email on a regular cadence
Growth in program registrations and community awareness attributable to outreach activity
Strong attendance and sponsor engagement at NAMI events
Established relationships with new community partners
