Job Summary
Responsible for maintaining the hospital census to identify the facility's bed complement, patient's location, occupied beds and bed availability. Coordinates and controls the placement of all inpatients (urgent, emergent, and elective) between referring physicians, hospital personnel, and nursing. Responsible for registration, verification, collection of co-pays/deductibles, pre-certification or authorization of accounts, referrals to Financial Counseling for assistance in payment options. Flexible days/hours based on business needs.

- C. Job Specific Contacts 1. General Contacts: Department heads, supervisors. Interaction with patients, family members, physicians and their office staff, hospital personnel, employers, funeral homes, various governmental agencies, third party agencies (insurance companies) in person, by telephone, fax or internet. 2. Job Provides Direction to: N/A D. Environment and Demands 1. Environmental Demands: Describes the physical environment in which the job must be performed. Admitting, ER and/or Business Office environment. Requires light physical effort on a regular basis, as in viewing CRT, frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping or reaching and/or occasional lifting of light items. 2. Essential Physical and Cognitive Demands, Manual Dexterity: Describes the physical efforts, manual dexterity and cognitive skills required for the job (i.e., hand/eye coordination, lifting, pulling, walking, concentration, analysis, customer sensitivity, etc.). Requires light physical effort on a regular basis, as in viewing CRT, frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping or reaching and/or occasional lifting of light items (i.e. up to 20 lbs.). B. MISSION/STRATEGIC PLAN: Participates in activities which support the mission of the hospital C. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES: Demonstrates the required job specific technical/professional knowledge, skills and abilities. * 1. Maintains integrity, accuracy and completeness of demographic, clinical and insurance information from data collection through data entry. 2. Gather claim data in compliance with governmental, third party and managed care requirements and/or for the subsequent maintenance of accounts to the point of payment or final resolution. 3. Verifies benefits, calculates and collects co-payments or deductibles. 4. Secure signature of the patient or representative for the release of information to the insurance company, the assignment of insurance benefits to the hospital, the authorization of the patient to receive treatment and any additional required permits or consents. 5. Reviews patient’s prior visits to determine if there are outstanding balances and refers to appropriate personnel. 6. Pre-register patients in anticipation of their arrival for services. 7. Educates customers in registration related issues via phone, correspondence or in person. 8. Advises, refers and assists patients in obtaining appropriate payment options, including Medicaid and Financial Assistance. 9. Assists Bed Placement Coordinator (Nursing Supervisor) with assigning accommodations based on the physician’s admittance orders, patient’s preference, nature of illness, availability of space, and other information. Responsible for preparing and maintaining the patient’s records of admission, transfer and discharge review of patient accounts and insurance documentation. 10. Escort direct admit patients to their rooms and complete signatures and missing billing information at bedside. 11. Coordinates all ADT functions including bed assignments. 12. Applies knowledge of computer functions and other available technology to facilitate accurate processing of claims by the payers. 13. Reviews and applies patient charges directly to the Accounts Receivable file, through order entry, keying and posting processes. 14. Responsible for the directing and control of daily registration activity and the interaction between physicians, nursing floors, ancillary departments, emergency department, patient finance, insurance companies and patients. 15. Responsible for assuring quality information related to the care of both inpatients and outpatients through departmental quality control measures. 16. Responsible for management of the morgue census and monitoring the completion of death certificates. In depth knowledge of expiration, autopsy protocols, and the state status regarding Medical Examiner and fetal demise cases. 17. Provide assistance and coverage for the Emergency Room, Radiology Registration Desk, Pre-Admission Testing, Information desk, Women’s Imaging, and Pediatric registration. 18. May perform other incidental tasks, as needed. 19. Responsible for the promotion of Service Excellence within the Admitting Department. * Document on addendum age specific competency. Qualifications
- High School Required
- Associate Degree Preferred
- Related Patient Access experience preferred. Strong customer service experience required. Clerical/Billing experience preferred. PC experience required (Word/Excel.)
