Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Richland County Prosecutor's Office is seeking a compassionate, organized, and dedicated Victim Advocate to provide direct support and assistance to victims of crime throughout the criminal justice process. This position serves as a critical liaison between crime victims, prosecutors, law enforcement, community agencies, and the court system, ensuring victims are informed of their rights, connected with appropriate resources, and supported throughout their involvement in the justice system.

The ideal candidate demonstrates empathy, professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively in emotionally challenging situations while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, and advocacy for victims of crime.
Explain the criminal justice process and victims' rights under Marcy’s Law.
Assist victims with completing victim impact statements, restitution requests, compensation applications, and other required documentation.
Maintain regular communication with victims regarding case status, court proceedings, hearings, and case outcomes.
Coordinate with prosecutors to ensure victims receive timely notification of hearings, plea agreements, sentencing, and other significant case developments.
Accompany victims to court proceedings when appropriate.
Make referrals to counseling, shelter services, financial assistance programs, and other community resources.
Maintain accurate case records and documentation in accordance with office policies and legal requirements.
Participate in community outreach, education, and victim awareness initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a closely related field preferred. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of education.
Experience working with crime victims, crisis intervention, social services, victim advocacy, or the criminal justice system is preferred.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
Ability to manage multiple cases and priorities simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working within a prosecutor's office, court system, or victim service agency.
Knowledge of victims' rights laws and criminal court procedures.
Training in trauma-informed care and crisis response.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong communication and active listening skills.
Compassion and professionalism when working with individuals experiencing trauma.
Sound judgment and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to remain calm under pressure.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
