The Animal Resources Unit of Oklahoma State University (OSU) invites applications for a veterinary assistant / technician / specialist position. OSU is a land grant institution with a wide breadth of activities involving vertebrate animals including agricultural, biomedical, and wildlife studies.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide veterinary medical care to University animals used in research, teaching and education, under the direction of the University Attending Veterinarian, or designee;
- Provide emergency care after-hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis with other Animal Resources’ faculty and staff;
- Provide technical service to research teams including data and sample collection, surgical care, euthanasia, etc;
- Assist with the training of Animal Resources’ staff, research investigators, and veterinary students;
- Maintain Animal Resources’ medical supplies and equipment in a state of readiness to provide animal care and to pass inspections from regulatory authorities;
- Perform as needed the husbandry responsibilities of an Animal Resources Technician, including maintaining facilities, observing and assessing animal health, feeding and watering animals, cleaning and sanitizing facilities, transporting animals and materials, maintaining documentation appropriate to an accredited animal care program, operating specialized equipment, carcass disposal, and laundering clothing and bedding.
Required Qualifications
- High School/GED.
- Two years related experience; OR Associate of Science degree in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program; OR; Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences or related area; OR DVM Degree or equivalent.
- Ability to pass a medical evaluation, which includes receiving medical clearance to wear/use a variety of respiratory protection devices and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- The person in this position will be required to be on-call periodically. This time is compensable.
- Must possess a valid driver's license for travel between sites.
- Proficient computer skills, which includes MS Office applications and database applications.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to pass respirator fit test.
- Ability to meet physical requirements for lifting 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
· Registered Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician Specialist recognized by the Academy of Laboratory Animal Veterinary Technicians and Nurses, and/or certified by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science as an ALAT, LAT, or LATG.
Exceptional Working Conditions
· Exposure to animal diseases that may be transmitted to humans.
· Subject to animal scratches or bites.
· Exposure to chemicals and pharmaceuticals used in treatment of animals, medical waste, animal feces, urine, blood, and vomitus.
· Exposure to hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic drugs.
· Loud noises related to small and large animals are routine.
· Must comply with mandatory rabies pre-exposure vaccine program..
Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
