Baker Center for the Arts a professional, welcoming, and unforgettable experience. Whether you're a people person, detail-oriented, a tech wizard, or a backstage problem-solver, there’s a place for you at The Baker Center!
We present large-scale national tours, student showcases, and community performances—and it takes an incredible team to make it all happen. Some productions require more than 30 backstage and technical positions, so we're always building our trusted crew.
Front of House Volunteer Roles
Concession Worker
Role Summary:
Serve snacks and beverages to patrons while maintaining a friendly, professional demeanor.
Key Responsibilities:
Set up, restock, and operate the concession stand
Handle cash and card transactions using our POS system
Serve pre-packaged snacks, soda, and water
Maintain cleanliness and follow health & safety guidelines
Assist with closing inventory and clean-up
Usher
Role Summary:
Create a welcoming experience by helping patrons find their seats and ensuring a smooth entry into the theater.
Key Responsibilities:
Greet and direct guests to their assigned seats
Distribute programs and answer general questions
Monitor audience behavior during performances
Assist with emergency procedures if needed
Support late seating with discretion and professionalism
Box Office Assistant
Role Summary:
Provide customer service support and help guests with ticket purchases and will-call pickups.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with ticket sorting at will-call
Answer basic questions about showtimes and seating
Support Box Office staff with data entry or crowd control
Handle simple ticketing issues under supervision
Greeter
Role Summary:
Be the first friendly face our guests encounter! Set the tone for an inviting and professional atmosphere.
Key Responsibilities:
Welcome patrons at entrances and direct them to the proper areas
Offer directions to restrooms, concessions, and theater entrances
Provide accessible assistance for guests with special needs
Answer general questions about the event or venue
Ticket Scanner
Role Summary:
Help ensure efficient entry by scanning tickets and verifying guest admission.
Key Responsibilities:
Use handheld scanners to validate digital or printed tickets
Direct guests to ushers and seating areas
Troubleshoot invalid tickets or reprints with support staff
Help manage lines to ensure a smooth guest flow
Back of House & Technical Crew Roles
Audio/Visual Technician
Role Summary: Support sound and projection needs for touring and in-house shows.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with sound checks and mic setup
Monitor audio levels during performances
Set up video elements as needed
Lighting Technician
Role Summary: Help program, focus, and operate lighting for performances.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with lighting hangs and cue programming
Operate light board or follow spot during shows
Perform lighting maintenance
Stage Carpenter / Show Assistant
Role Summary: Assist in scenic load-in, construction, and setup.
Key Responsibilities:
Assemble and disassemble set pieces
Work with touring crew to complete quick changes and scene transitions
Having your own basic tool set is highly recommended
Props Assistant
Role Summary: Help manage and organize show props.
Key Responsibilities:
Flymen / Riggers
Role Summary: Operate counterweight fly systems and support rigging.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with flown scenery, drapes, or lighting
Follow safety procedures for overhead rigging
Basic Entertainment Rigging Course Completion REQUIRED
Electrician / Deck Electrician
Role Summary: Assist with electrics and power for production elements.
Key Responsibilities:
Run cable, test power, and assist with backstage lighting
Some electrical experience is preferred
Wardrobe Assistant
Role Summary: Manage/assist with costume quick changes and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with pre-show dressing
Perform quick changes backstage
Steam, press, or mend garments as needed
Spotlight Operator
Role Summary: Run follow-spot cues during performances.
Key Responsibilities:
Loaders / Pushers
Role Summary: Assist with load-in/load-out of touring productions.
Key Responsibilities:
Move scenic, lighting, and sound equipment
Follow the touring company's direction for placement and staging
May include overnight or extended hours during strike
