Full Job Description

Job Overview

An established, growing mechanical construction contractor (HVAC & plumbing) in the greater Philadelphia/South Jersey region is seeking a Chief Operating Officer to lead company-wide construction operations, with a strong emphasis on direct ownership of our New Jersey business — our highest-volume market. This is a senior leadership role for an experienced construction operator with real technical depth in HVAC and plumbing, who can walk a job site, solve problems on the spot, and hold project teams accountable to sound technical and operational decisions.

This is a hands-on leadership role, not a purely strategic one. You’ll be expected to be in the field, on active job sites, and directly accountable for construction performance in our core NJ market, while also providing operational oversight across our broader footprint.

Key Responsibilities

Construction Operations Leadership

∙ Take direct ownership of day-to-day construction operations in New Jersey — our primary market — including project execution, field crews, and site coordination

∙ Provide operational oversight and coordination of construction projects across all divisions and locations

∙ Align people, systems, and processes to drive project efficiency, quality, and profitability company-wide

Financial & Performance Management

∙ Own P&L performance for construction operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and margin management by project

∙ Set and track job-level KPIs; hold project managers and field supervisors accountable to performance and schedule standards

∙ Partner with the finance team on job costing, WIP visibility, and project cost control

Team Leadership

∙ Lead, mentor, and develop project managers, superintendents, and field supervisors

∙ Build accountability structures and performance standards across install and construction crews

∙ Drive hiring, staffing, and workforce planning to support project growth

Process & Systems

∙ Strengthen scheduling, estimating, and project workflow processes using construction/field management platforms (ServiceTitan)

∙ Identify and resolve technical and operational bottlenecks on active job sites

∙ Ensure compliance with trade licensing, safety, and regulatory requirements across all operating states

Strategic Partnership

∙ Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, partnering directly with ownership on company strategy and long-term growth planning

∙ Provide operational input on new market entry, project pipeline growth, and acquisition integration

∙ Represent the company in key customer, vendor, and partner relationships as needed

Qualifications

∙ 8+ years of construction operations leadership experience in HVAC, plumbing, or multi-trade mechanical contracting, including P&L ownership

∙ Proven experience running large-scale construction projects and field operations — not just overseeing from a distance

∙ Strong technical, hands-on knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems — able to walk a job site, evaluate a technical problem, and make a sound call without relying on others to translate it

∙ A natural problem-solver who can diagnose technical and construction issues in the field and drive them to resolution, not just escalate them

∙ Experience managing multi-location or multi-division construction operations preferred

∙ Working knowledge of New Jersey trade licensing and regulatory requirements

∙ Demonstrated ability to build teams, structure, and accountability in a fast-moving construction environment

∙ Experience with construction/field management software (ServiceTitan preferred)
