Job Title: Counselor Advocate
Program: Emergency Housing
Location: Mercer County (Sharon)
Employment Type: Full-Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Reports To: Director of Emergency Services

Make a Difference Every Day

AWARE is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Counselor Advocate to support survivors of domestic and sexual violence within our Emergency Housing program. This role is ideal for someone who is trauma-informed, empathetic, and committed to empowering individuals on their path to safety and stability.

Position Overview

The Counselor Advocate provides survivor-centered advocacy, crisis intervention, and housing support services to adult survivors residing in emergency housing. You will play a vital role in helping individuals rebuild their lives through safety planning, resource coordination, and emotional support.

Key ResponsibilitiesDirect Survivor Support

Provide crisis intervention and ongoing advocacy services
Conduct safety planning, danger assessments, and intake evaluations
Offer referrals, systems advocacy, and court accompaniment when needed
Assist with protection order processes (PFA/SVPO/PFI)
Support survivors with applications such as VCAP
Collaborate with partner organizations, including services for older adults

Emergency Housing Services

Assess eligibility and manage documentation for housing placement
Facilitate weekly house meetings and support groups
Provide life skills and educational programming for residents
Coordinate services for children and teens with youth programs
Maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming living environment
Monitor safety systems and report maintenance or security concerns

Collaboration & Program Support

Participate in cross-training and interdisciplinary teamwork
Support other agency programs as needed
Attend team meetings to ensure coordinated, holistic care

Community Engagement

Conduct outreach and community education on domestic and sexual violence
Represent AWARE at events, trainings, and community partnerships
Engage in systems advocacy to improve survivor services

Administrative Duties

Maintain accurate, timely documentation (ETO, ESG, reports)
Attend required meetings, trainings, and continuing education (10+ hours annually)
Travel as needed to support clients

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or a related field preferred, OR
High school diploma (or equivalent) plus 3+ years of relevant experience
Experience in a helping profession strongly preferred
Ability to work effectively and sensitively with survivors of trauma
Strong communication, organizational, and advocacy skills

Schedule & Requirements

Availability for evening and weekend hours as needed
Ability to travel locally to support survivor services
