Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Director, Accounting & Finance provides leadership and oversight for accounting and financial operations, with a keen and primary focus on grant management, grant accounting, and sponsored project financial administration. Grant management experience is required and will represent a substantial portion of the Director’s responsibilities.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director will oversee the financial management of sponsored-project portfolio throughout the complete grant lifecycle. This includes award establishment, budget development, expenditure monitoring, payroll allocations, cost transfers, financial forecasting, invoicing, sponsor reporting, reconciliation, compliance, audit preparation, and award closeout.

The Director will serve as the Finance lead for Cayuse Fund Manager, a post-award financial management system. The position will be responsible for supporting the implementation, configuration, testing, data validation, financial integration, reporting, user training, and ongoing administration of Cayuse Fund Manager.

The Director will use Cayuse Fund Manager to provide current visibility into grant budgets, expenditures, commitments, available balances, payroll allocations, projected spending, and financial risks. The Director will develop standardized grant reports, dashboards, reconciliations, procedures, and internal controls to improve grant oversight, data integrity, financial forecasting, regulatory compliance, and audit readiness.

The Director will meet regularly with principal investigators and Research Administration to review grant portfolios, evaluate current and projected spending, identify funding gaps, monitor reporting and closeout deadlines, and address financial or compliance concerns. The Director will translate complex grant requirements and financial information into clear, practical guidance for scientific and administrative stakeholders.

Director will support general accounting operations, including general-ledger activity, month-end and year-end closing, journal entries, account reconciliations, accounts receivable, revenue recognition, financial-statement preparation, budgeting, forecasting, audit coordination, and internal controls.

Required Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a closely related field is required.
Candidates must have at least seven-ten years of progressively responsible accounting and financial-management experience, including substantial hands-on experience in grant management, grant accounting, and post-award sponsored-project administration.
Demonstrated experience managing federally sponsored awards and applying Uniform Guidance principles is required.
Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, nonprofit accounting, internal controls, financial reporting, grant compliance, audit preparation, account reconciliation, budgeting, and financial analysis is required.
Experience using grant-management, sponsored-project, and financial-management systems is required. Direct experience with Cayuse Fund Manager or a comparable post-award financial management system is strongly preferred.
Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency and the ability to analyze, reconcile, forecast, interpret, and clearly communicate complex grant and financial information are required.
Experience supervising, developing, or providing functional leadership to accounting or grant-management professionals is required.
