Full Job Description

Company Description: Tier Power Systems designs and manufactures custom low-voltage switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, industrial control panels, and electrical enclosures that support mission-critical power infrastructure. We are growing rapidly and are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, turning concepts into detailed 3D models while working closely with manufacturing to deliver high-quality products.

Job Summary: The Mechanical Design Engineer owns the complete mechanical design lifecycle for custom electrical equipment—from customer specifications through 3D modeling, manufacturing release and first-article validation. This role designs and models sheet metal enclosures, copper bus systems, and mechanical assemblies while partnering closely with manufacturing, electrical engineering, and production to develop scalable, manufacturable solutions.

This is a hands-on engineering role with approximately 60% office-based design work and 40% manufacturing floor support, ensuring designs transition successfully from CAD to production.

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

Design and model custom sheet metal enclosures, mechanical assemblies, and copper bus systems using 3D SolidWorks design and modeling.
Develop detailed manufacturing drawings, Bills of Material, and engineering documentation.
Support fabrication and assembly by troubleshooting production issues and improving manufacturability.
Build and inspect first-article (first-of-kind) units to validate designs and models before production.
Create and maintain manufacturing work instructions and CNC configuration files.
Collaborate with electrical engineers, production, vendors, and third-party testing laboratories.
Lead or support new product development, UL listing projects, seismic evaluations, and R&D initiatives.
Develop standardized, scalable designs and engineering standards that improve quality, efficiency, and repeatability.
Manage multiple engineering projects while meeting customer and production deadlines.
Promote safe work practices and support quality, reliability, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

Required

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent military/work experience.
4–7 years of mechanical design experience in a manufacturing environment.
Strong 3D CAD experience (SolidWorks preferred).
Experience creating fabrication drawings, enclosure layouts, and manufacturing documentation.
Working knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, including punching, bending, welding, and mechanical assemblies.

Preferred

Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Experience designing switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, or industrial control panels.
Experience with UL 891 and/or UL 508A switchboard equipment and modeling standards.
Experience supporting custom manufacturing and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) initiatives.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
Must be able to handle exposure to moderate noise, dust, vibration and temperature variations typical to a manufacturing environment.
Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb ladders or stairs when inspecting equipment or supporting production.
Ability to use hands and fingers for computer operation, CAD modeling, measuring equipment, and handling engineering tools and components.
