Job Title: Director of Clinical Services (DCS) – Hospice

Reports To: Executive Director / Administrator
Department: Clinical Services

Position Summary

The Director of Clinical Services (DCS) is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of hospice clinical programs. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, compliant, and compassionate end-of-life care in accordance with regulatory standards. The DCS provides strategic and operational leadership to the interdisciplinary team, oversees clinical managers and nursing staff, and partners with executive leadership to achieve organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Oversight

Provide leadership and supervision to clinical managers, RNs, LVNs/LPNs, hospice aides, and other clinical team members
Oversee development, implementation, and evaluation of individualized patient care plans
Ensure effective interdisciplinary team (IDT) functioning and care coordination
Act as the highest clinical authority for patient care issues and complex case management

Regulatory Compliance & Quality

Ensure compliance with federal and state hospice regulations, including Medicare Conditions of Participation
Lead Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs
Oversee clinical documentation standards, audits, and corrective action plans
Direct survey readiness efforts and serve as primary clinical contact during audits/surveys

Operational Management

Manage clinical operations, including staffing models, productivity, and caseload distribution
Monitor admissions, length of stay, live discharges, and other key operational metrics
Collaborate with intake and business development to ensure appropriate and timely admissions
Oversee on-call systems and clinical coverage

Financial Stewardship

Develop and manage clinical department budgets in collaboration with executive leadership
Monitor resource utilization, labor costs, and productivity to ensure financial sustainability
Support census growth while maintaining quality and compliance

Staff Development & Culture

Lead recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention strategies for clinical staff
Establish competency standards and ensure ongoing education and professional development
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and compassionate care
Address performance issues and implement progressive discipline when necessary

Patient & Family Experience

Ensure delivery of patient- and family-centered care that respects cultural, spiritual, and emotional needs
Oversee service recovery for complaints or concerns related to clinical care
Promote excellence in symptom management, comfort care, and end-of-life support

Strategic Leadership

Participate in organizational planning, program development, and growth initiatives
Collaborate with executive leadership on policies, procedures, and clinical best practices
Analyze data and trends to drive decision-making and improve outcomes

Qualifications

Education & Licensure

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing (state-specific)
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree (MSN, MHA, or related) preferred

Experience

Minimum 5–7 years of hospice or palliative care experience
At least 3-5 years in a clinical leadership or management role
Experience with regulatory surveys and compliance strongly preferred

Skills & Competencies

In-depth knowledge of hospice regulations and standards of care
Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making abilities
Financial and operational acumen
Excellent communication and team-building skills
Ability to manage change and drive performance improvement

Working Conditions

Office and field-based role with regular travel to patient care settings
Participation in on-call leadership coverage as needed
High level of emotional intelligence and resilience required
