Youth Development Institute (YDI), a private, nonprofit corporation providing rehabilitation and treatment services for youth and their families, is looking for a Milieu Coordinator for YDI’s licensed behavioral health inpatient facility. YDI’s inpatient facility is a residential treatment center that provides trauma-informed care for adolescents that is restraint-free.

YDI’s Milieu Coordinators provide the supervision of staff and youth during each shift ensuring that the milieu schedule, activities, and psychoeducational programs are provided in a safe and supportive environment for both youth and staff.
The attached job description provides the requirements and duties but does not convey the fulfilment that comes from supervising a milieu that is restraint-free, where crisis intervention relies on your ability to calm and comfort rather than an ability to physically restrain youth.
Job Description:
Milieu Coordinator is supervised by the Co - Executive Directors. The Milieu Coordinator works independently, demonstrates leadership abilities and supervises the Unit Coordinators. Milieu Coordinator in conjunction with Unit Coordinators ensures that Youth Care Workers are provided training, coaching, supervision and are utilizing appropriate practices when providing non therapeutic services such as, but not limited to, life skills education and training, recreational and social activities and milieu activities for both male and female adolescents between the ages of 10 thru 17. Milieu Coordinator is responsible for ensuring order and consistency per YDI policies and procedures to ensure the facilities provide a safe and caring environment for youth. Communicates and coordinates clearly and timely with Co - Executive Directors and Administrator On Call. This position has variable shifts and requires flexibility of work hours to meet licensure service requirements. Youth Care worker IV is responsible for ensuring the safety of both youth and staff, implementing youth’s treatment goals in manner that is nurturing and respectful. Youth Care Worker IV is expected to meet all performance standards, duties, physical requirements, trainings and supervision requirements listed under duties for a Youth Care Worker IV.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED or have received an associate’s degree from an accredited community college and have relevant experience and training with the population being served. Must be eligible and obtain a State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance card. At all times must be physically capable to perform duties that ensure the care and safety of youth and staff.
Must possess an Arizona driver's license within 30 days after start of employment and have a driving record that is insurable under agency insurance policy if hired as staff for Level II TGH or Outpatient programs.
DUTIES
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
1. Attend and participate in training as required.
a. Satisfactorily complete trainings required by contractual, licensure and accreditation requirements with AOC, OBHL, RBHA’s, JCAHO.
· 1st year of hire complete 48 hours of continuing education or in service training
· After 1st year of hire obtain a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education or in-service training annually.
2. Supervise youth.
a. Move and transport youth according to YDI policies and procedures and assigned program procedures.
b. Understand and follow specialized youths' programs, behavioral contingency plans, rules of conduct, dress code, daily schedule and facility operational expectations.
c. Use good judgment and follow established YDI policies and procedures and facility operational expectations.
d. Conduct accurate routine head counts in accordance to established YDI policies and procedures and facility operational expectations.
e. Understand and follow established procedures for special needs students, i.e., suicide, health and medical etc.
3. Participate in treatment programming as required obtaining supervision monthly as required by contractual, licensure and accreditation requirements with AOC, OBHL, RBHA’s, JCAHO:
a. Attend Weekly Team Meetings, Change of Shift, Individual Supervision and other supervision meeting to gain knowledge of appropriate and individualized treatment modalities.
b. Coordinate with the unit coordinators, nursing and case managers to ensure outings, appointments, hearings and passes are scheduled and staff coverage is available.
c. Understand and implement the clients’ treatment plan.
4. Maintain order.
a. Maintain discipline in accordance to YDI policies and procedures and facility operational expectation.
b. Call for assistance when necessary.
c. Collaborates with the AOC prior to placing calls to 911 or other law enforcement.
d. Ensure student rights are maintained.
e. Use initiative and good judgment to assess situations.
f. If necessary, restrain youth in accordance to YDI policies and procedures and demonstrate knowledge and skills in Therapeutic Physical/Crisis Intervention.
g. Demonstrate ability to be firm and objective in dealing with youth.
5. Demonstrate intervention skills including Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Keys to Innervisions.
a. Conduct individual intervention and group in accordance to the YDI expectations.
b. Utilize KIV tools and techniques in accordance with YDI expectations.
c. Demonstrate and train staff to resolve disagreements and minor conflicts with youth in an individual and/or group setting by utilizing power phrases, comfort rooms, catch games and positive IRs instead of restraints.
d. Provide leadership in the debriefing stages with youth and staff and staff review of restraint by conducting critical review of incident and exploring other alternatives to restraints.
6. Model appropriate behavior for students and staff.
a. Demonstrate care, concern, honesty, dependability, reasonableness, confidentiality, fairness and respect for youth and others.
b. Encourage and teach, by example, proper child care techniques.
c. Encourage and teach, by example, socially acceptable behavior.
d. Supervise the development of Advocate Duties of YCW I and II by UC’s.
7. Supervise and coach assigned Unit Coordinators and Youth Care Workers.
a. Supervises, coaches, provides training for Unit Coordinators and other Youth Care Workers in regards to operational expectation, policies and documentation.
b. Ensures that Unit Coordinators assigned Youth Care Workers I and II receive and have documented appropriate training hours and supervision as required by contractual obligations.
c. Conducts performance evaluations, performance improvement plans for assigned Unit Coordinators and Youth Care Workers in a timely manner.
d. Ensure that Unit Coordinators complete performance evaluations and, performance improvement plans for their assigned Youth Care Worker I and II in a timely manner.
e. Monitors and provides feedback to staff regarding performance.
f. Reports any conflicts between staff for resolutions to their supervisory staff for resolution.
g. Reports to management any conflicts between supervisory staff and Youth Care workers.
h. Acts as a liaison between Youth Care Workers and administration to ensure smooth flow of communication of operating procedures, and policy changes.
8. Work as assigned; remain flexible and respond to changing situations.
a. Be prompt.
b. Stay abreast of changing schedules, rules, procedures and priorities and be able to communicate these changes to staff.
c. Notify supervisor, according to YDI policies and procedures, to obtain approval if unable to work as assigned.
d. Provide appropriate documentation, in accordance to YDI policies and procedures, for leave or absences.
e. Work overtime or be on call as required.
f. Attend required meetings.
g. Work any shift pattern or post assigned.
h. Perform job related duties as assigned by supervisor.
i. Demonstrate knowledge of Work and Personal Conduct Policy.
9. Complete required reports and paperwork.
a. All YDI required reports/paperwork will be completed accurately and timely in accordance to YDI policies and procedures and facility operational expectations.
b. Review Unit Coordinators paperwork and all debriefing forms for accuracy and if necessary provide coaching to correct deficiencies.
c. Complete incident reports as necessary
d. Complete SRRF documentation as necessary
e. Facilitate hand off of precaution paperwork, safety plans, etc. between shifts.
f. Complete Milieu Coordinator report.
10. Ensure safe, clean and secure environment at all times.
a. Have thorough knowledge of and follow YDI and local safety procedures.
b. Complete accurate documentation in the event of an accident.
c. Report safety hazards to appropriate personnel. Correct hazard when possible.
d. Follow up on work orders and report any work order that creates a safety or hazard issue to administration.
e. Ensure that units are adequately supplied with youth supplies and staff documents.
f. Identify, label and store hazardous materials in accordance to YDI policies and procedures and facility operational expectations.
g. Mentor and supervise UC’s in the developing YCWs regarding engaging and modeling for youth unit/room cleanliness on a daily basis.
h. Ensure that monthly Environment of Care rounds (EOC) are completed by UC’s and submit to Administrative Director.
i. Complete random room searches, at least 3 per week.
j. Ensure cleanliness of the facilities to include the dayrooms, bedrooms, laundry rooms, staff stations and comfort rooms.
k. Facilitate the Cleanliness Awards on a weekly basis.
11. Comply with all policies, rules, and procedures outlined in all YDI manuals, operational expectations and memoranda.
a. Perform all duties in accordance to YDI standards and local facility operational expectations.
12. Ensure confidentiality.
a. Abide by YDI confidentiality policies and procedures and facility operational expectations.
13. Attend and receive clinical supervision as required
a. Abide by YDI policies and procedures and facility operational expectations related to monthly supervision.
14. Maintain basic physical requirements necessary to perform essential functions of the Youth Care Worker position.
a. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours)
b. Ability to sit for up to 8 hours
c. Ability to lift 50 pounds from floor to waist
d. Ability to run .10 mile
e. Ability to remain awake and alert for a minimum of 8 hours and a maximum of 16 hours
f. Ability to pass an eye examination with or without corrective lenses equivalent to having vision of at least 20/30.
g. Ability to drive a vehicle
h. Ability to kneel for at least 20 minutes and return to a standing position without assistance.
i. Ability to work in an emotionally stressful environment with difficult and sometimes dangerous adolescents with no serious effect on physical or mental health.
j. Ability to perform restraints, which includes:
A. Ability to safely hold youth during restraint
B. Ability to safely transfer youth from standing to prone position
C. Ability to respond to combative movements by youth requiring agility while maintaining non-threatening posture.
1. Ability to be flexible enough to perform bending and kneeling movements and stay in positions for up to 20 minutes

10. Ability to pass all minimum training requirements for sole supervision (first aid, CPR, self- defense, physical restraint and in-service training).
11. Ability and willingness to use and help others use skills acquired in training.
12. Ability and willingness to work changing shift patterns and overtime, as required by supervisor and report for duty when emergencies arise.
13. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
14. Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with youths, co-workers and supervisors.
15. Ability to demonstrate and willingness to physically restrain a youth according to YDI's policies and procedures.
16. Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
17. May require verbal fluency in both English and Spanish.
