Program Support Specialist I – Weekends

Reports To: Program Manager
Direct Reports: None
Location: Pine City, Minnesota

Schedule

The Weekend Program Support Specialist I works weekend shifts and may occasionally be required to provide additional coverage based on organizational and staffing needs. Some holidays are required.

Available Weekend Shifts

Day Shift: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Afternoon Shift: 4:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. (Midnight)
Overnight Shift: 12:00 a.m. (Midnight) – 8:00 a.m.

Hours: 16–20 hours per week

Position Summary

A Place For You provides emergency shelter for single adults and resource connections for individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness in East Central Minnesota. Program Support Specialists are essential frontline staff responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and supportive environment for all residents during all hours of operation.

The Program Support Specialist I (PSS I) is a direct-support position responsible for maintaining shelter safety, supervision, documentation, resident support, and facility oversight during assigned weekend shifts. Positions may be assigned to day, afternoon, or overnight shifts and may occasionally provide coverage outside their regularly scheduled shift based on organizational needs.

The role ensures continuity of care, responds to resident needs and emergencies, completes documentation, supports residents in a trauma-informed manner, and helps maintain daily shelter operations. This position plays a critical role in maintaining a calm, secure, and supportive environment while ensuring policies and procedures are followed consistently.

The Weekend Program Support Specialist I serves as a key member of the shelter team by promoting resident safety, supporting a positive community living environment, and helping ensure smooth shelter operations during weekend hours.

Key ResponsibilitiesProvide Resident Supervision and Trauma-Informed SupportSo That:

The shelter remains safe, secure, and stable throughout all operating hours.
Residents experience respectful, compassionate, trauma-informed care.
Concerns, crises, or emergencies are addressed promptly and escalated appropriately.
Shelter expectations are consistently upheld.
Residents feel supported while maintaining a safe and respectful community environment.

Responsibilities Include:

Monitoring resident activity and maintaining facility safety.
Responding to incidents, emergencies, or behavioral concerns.
Completing required safety and wellness checks throughout shifts.
Supporting residents with de-escalation, problem-solving, and resource navigation as appropriate.
Reinforcing shelter policies, expectations, and community standards.

Maintain Accurate Documentation and Shift CommunicationSo That:

Shelter activities are clearly documented for continuity of care.
Staff across shifts receive complete and accurate information.
Intake updates, incidents, and resident interactions are recorded according to policy.
Confidentiality is maintained at all times.

Responsibilities Include:

Completing detailed shift reports.
Entering documentation into Apricot and other tracking systems.
Recording incidents, observations, and resident interactions accurately.
Communicating clearly with incoming staff during shift transitions.

Support Facility Safety and Daily OperationsSo That:

The shelter remains clean, organized, and secure.
Entry procedures and facility operations are consistently followed.
Facility needs are addressed promptly and professionally.

Responsibilities Include:

Monitoring building security and secure entry procedures.
Ensuring common areas remain clean, safe, and welcoming.
Completing assigned cleaning and organizational tasks.
Checking supplies, restocking as needed, and reporting maintenance concerns.
Supporting donation handling and organization according to procedures when applicable.

Respond to Emergencies and Crisis SituationsSo That:

Residents and staff remain safe during unexpected situations.
Emergency procedures are followed correctly and consistently.
Appropriate agencies or leadership are contacted when necessary.

Responsibilities Include:

Following emergency protocols related to medical, behavioral, or facility safety concerns.
Contacting emergency services or on-call leadership when required.
Documenting incidents thoroughly and accurately.
Maintaining professionalism and sound judgment during high-stress situations.

Contribute to Team Communication and Organizational StandardsSo That:

Staff operate consistently within policies and procedures.
The organization maintains a respectful, professional workplace culture.

Responsibilities Include:

Reviewing shift notes and organizational updates at the start of each shift.
Providing detailed verbal and written handoff reports.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.
Minimum one (1) year of experience in human services, shelter operations, housing programs, behavioral health, social services, customer service, security, or a related field.
Ability to work assigned weekend day, afternoon, or overnight shifts, including holidays as scheduled.
Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and decision-making skills.
Strong communication, conflict resolution, and problem-solving abilities.
General computer proficiency, including email, data entry, and electronic documentation systems.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
Ability to remain alert, responsive, and professional throughout assigned shifts.
Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, walking, bending, twisting, climbing stairs, and lifting up to 35 pounds.
Ability to pass a criminal background check and DHS background study.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use disorders, or housing instability.
Training in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, de-escalation, or related fields.
CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification.

Compensation and BenefitsHourly Wage

$17.50 – $20.50 per hour based on education and experience.

Additional Compensation

$1.00 per hour overnight shift differential for hours worked between 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.
