Full Job Description

Job Overview
Join our dynamic Ambulatory Surgery Center as a Circulating RN / Scrub RN, where your expertise will directly impact patient care and surgical excellence. In this vital role, you will provide perioperative nursing care in the operating room. This role functions in both the circulator and scrub nurse capacities, supporting surgeons and the surgical team before, during, and after procedures. The RN ensures patient safety, maintains sterile technique, prepares instruments and supplies, and coordinates intraoperative care in accordance with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and evidence-based practice.

Circulating Nurse Responsibilities

Coordinate patient care activities in the operating room before, during, and after surgical procedures.
Verify patient identity, surgical site, procedure, and consent according to safety protocols.
Perform preoperative assessments and ensure required documentation is complete.
Manage surgical supplies, equipment, and instrumentation during procedures.
Maintain accurate intraoperative documentation in the electronic medical record.
Serve as the patient advocate throughout the perioperative process.
Communicate with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and surgical team members to ensure safe patient care.

Scrub Nurse Responsibilities

Prepare and maintain the sterile field throughout surgical procedures.
Set up sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical cases.
Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon and surgical team during procedures.
Anticipate the needs of the surgical team to maintain efficient workflow.
Perform sponge, sharps, and instrument counts in collaboration with the circulating nurse.
Ensure adherence to sterile technique and infection prevention standards.

Additional Duties

Participate in room turnover and preparation for subsequent surgical cases.
Assist with specimen handling and labeling according to policy.
Support quality improvement initiatives and compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., AAAHC, AORN guidelines).
Provide mentorship and guidance to surgical technologists, new staff, and students as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Pennsylvania.
Graduate of an accredited nursing program .
Minimum 1–2 years of operating room experience preferred.
Demonstrated experience functioning as both circulator and scrub nurse preferred.
Basic Life Support (BLS/ACLS) certification required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in multiple surgical specialties with 2 or more years in plastics.
Experience with electronic medical records used in perioperative settings.

Skills & Competencies

Strong knowledge of sterile technique and perioperative nursing standards.
Ability to anticipate surgical team needs and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Commitment to patient safety and quality outcomes.

Work Environment

Fast-paced operating room setting with exposure to surgical equipment, blood, and bodily fluids.
Requires prolonged standing, lifting, and assisting with patient positioning.
NO overnights, weekends or holidays.
