About Us

Benge's Ace Hardware operates a growing group of Ace Hardware retail stores, providing the tools, products, and hometown service our communities count on. As we continue to expand, we're building out the financial backbone that will support that growth — and we're looking for a Controller who wants to grow right along with us.

The Opportunity

This role is more than a Controller position — it's a chance to build. You'll take ownership of the accounting function across our store locations, manage our accounts payable team, and work closely with ownership on the financial side of the business. As Benge's continues to grow, this role has a clear path to becoming the Head of Accounting/Finance for the entire organization, with the opportunity to build and lead a larger finance team.

What You'll Do

Oversee day-to-day accounting operations across all Benge's Ace Hardware store locations, including general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
Manage and mentor the accounts payable (AP) staff — overseeing invoice processing, vendor payments, and vendor relationships.
Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process; prepare accurate store-level and consolidated financial statements.
Monitor inventory accounting and cost of goods sold (COGS), including inventory valuation and shrinkage tracking across locations.
Prepare store-level P&Ls, budgets, and forecasts; provide variance analysis and financial insights to ownership.
Manage cash flow, bank reconciliations, and banking relationships.
Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies as the company scales.
Ensure compliance with applicable sales tax, payroll, and regulatory requirements across store locations.
Coordinate with outside CPAs/tax preparers and support any external financial reviews or audits.
Partner with ownership on financial planning and strategy as Benge's grows — with the opportunity to step into a Head of Accounting/Finance role over time.

What We're Looking For

5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
CPA preferred (active or in progress).
Retail industry background preferred; experience with multi-location retail operations is a strong plus.
Experience managing or supervising accounting staff, particularly accounts payable.
Solid working knowledge of GAAP and retail accounting concepts, including inventory and COGS.
Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar)
Strong Excel skills and comfort working with financial data across multiple locations.
A hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves mindset with the leadership skills to grow into a bigger role as the company expands.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with ownership in a close-knit, growing organization.
