Our Goal:
We are seeking a highly skilled seamstress to join our established alterations company. As a part of our team you’ll be able to showcase, and be appreciated, for your expert sewing ability. Fyn Apparel, which has been in Portland for over 10 years, performs alterations on men’s, womens, and bridal garments. You will be responsible for altering and repairing garments with excellent craftsmanship and professional customer service. Your attention to detail, problem solving, and ability to work independently (with team support) is vital in this role. Key Responsibilities:
- Complete quality alterations and repairs, based on pinning or notes, in time efficient manner
- Collaborate with coworkers to ensure the best result for customers
- Follow safety guidelines and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Sewing skills including but not limited to: Selecting a suitable thread color and weight for the garment. Cutting, sewing, and gluing fabric according to the requirements of each article. Affixing buttons, zippers, clasps, laces, and similar fittings. Ironing and steaming when needed.
- Detecting and remedying basic faults with the sewing machine as they occur such as replacing needles, adjusting stitch length or tensions.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area. Including putting tools in designated location, vacuuming, and removal of trash at the end of work day.
Requirements
- 3+ years professional sewing role
- Positive workplace attitude, and able to work well with a small team
- Be patient and effective when communicating in a multilingual sewing room
- Excellent attention to detail and strong hand-eye coordination.
- Proficient in operating sewing machines and various hand tools
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
- Basic mathematical skills for measurements and calculations.
- Ability to read and interpret patterns and specifications.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
- Ability to do quality alterations such as: zipper adjustments, hems, sleeve and shoulder adjustments.
- Knowledge of different fabrics, their properties, and proper handling.
- Experience working in fabrics such as: crepe, satin, tulle, chiffon, natural and polyester fibers
- Willingness to cross train across all job types including doing fittings.
- Preferred: Education in sewing and garment construction
- Preferred: Experience in bridal alterations
Additional information
Expected hours: 16-30 hours per week (set weekly schedule, overtime hours available)
Supplemental pay: tips, choice of overtime, raise after first year
Pay: Based on experience $20-$30 per hour
Test: Ability to pass sew test required for hiring
