POSITION SUMMARY
The Wellness Shift Supervisor is responsible for directly supervising the Wellness Counselors and ensuring the smooth functioning of the overall unit during their shift. They should ensure that interventions with clients are always safe, and trauma informed. The Shift Supervisor is responsible for accurate and timely communication with guardians and oncoming staff regarding all precaution changes, incidents, or other valuable information. The Wellness Shift Supervisor must be adept at coaching staff to meet Madrona quality care expectations. Shift Supervisors will also lead crisis interventions and oversee completion of required documentation.
This position requires excellence in all Wellness Counselor and Assistant Shift Supervisor responsibilities, knowledge, and skills, as well as competency in facilitating quality brief focused skills enhancement training, facilitating an effective shift debrief, ability to discern quality clinical documentation, effective incident command including ability to lead and ensure appropriate activation of CPI, DBT, CPS interventions, ability to follow through, direct empathetic communication, clear direction and performance coaching for all wellness staff, and the ability to build strong partnerships and utilize best practices in conflict resolution with youth, staff, and families. Training will be provided for each of these core competencies.
REQUIRED EDUCATION + EXPERIENCES
- Associates degree or equivalent experience in social services setting.
- At least 1-year of staff supervisory (e.g.; leadership, mentoring, coaching, training) experience in a full time care setting helping individuals with emotional and behavioral difficulties, preferably in a residential treatment or hospital setting, or with clients with substance use concerns.
- Understanding and ability to train to developmental psychology.
- Understanding and willingness to learn age-specific, diagnostic-specific, and cultural-specific needs of the population served.
- Knowledge and willingness to continue learning trauma-informed practice and inter-disciplinary care coordination.
- Ability to facilitate or willingness to learn staff development
PREFERED EDUCATION + EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral health related field or equivalent experience.
- At least two years of experience helping individuals with emotional and behavioral difficulties in full-time care, preferably in a residential treatment or hospital setting, or with clients with substance use concerns.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally diverse environment. Must have a commitment to providing culturally responsive, and trauma informed care to individuals and communities who are disproportionately impacted by mental health and substance use concerns
- Must demonstrate an ability to navigate workplace conflicts and differences using non-violent, direct, and respectful communication in a diverse environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Cultivates a culture of feedback through open communication and demonstrates the ability to provide and receive coaching.
- Proactively addresses staffing needs per policy.
- Reenforces on the job coaching through Supervision conversations, as communicated by ASS. Supervision documentation must be available to that staff and Program Managers.
- Responsible to provide trauma-informed supervision at least once per month for Wellness Counselors and Assistant Supervisors as assigned based on scheduling.
- Responsible for executing program improvements as directed.
- Ensures that staff coming on shift have clearly assigned responsibilities, expectations, and supports to complete these tasks.
- Ensures the quality completion of progress notes, observations, TIB’s and CI’s within the required timeframes.
- Provides effective coaching, and coordinates with the PM and Ass SOD to provide additional training as needed to ensure highest quality staff performance.
- Acts as incident command and follow all critical incident policies and procedures.
- Debriefs regarding successful interventions, challenges, and incidents.
- Disbursement of medication per policy when assigned.
- Coordinates the team to facilitate safe and ongoing orientation of admitting clients. Provides risk assessment and collaborates with the inter-disciplinary admission team to support safe entry into the program.
- Follows all policy and procedures for client off-site visits.
- Supports the care team as needed to facilitate discharge as directed by the clinical team.
- Communicates risk trends to the Program Manager in a timely manner.
- Supports client interventions through participation in FOCUS.
- Be up to date on all in-service training requirements.
- Committed to following legal and ethical norms and expectations as outlined by Employee Code of Conduct, State law, Federal law, Joint Commission, NAADAC and OSHA. Follows reporting procedures to ensure client and staff safety.
KNOWLEDGE
- Required knowledge of Wellness Counselor roles and ability to train excellence and ensures documentation of such. In addition:
- Awareness and application of the Employee Code of Conduct.
- Expert knowledge in KIPU and clinical documentation standards.
- Knowledge of Madrona Recovery Crisis Response and Critical Incident Reporting Policy and Procedure.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Suite Tools.
SKILLS
- Demonstrates excellence in all skill requirements of a Wellness Counselor and Assistant Shift Supervisor and ability to provide effective coaching to these skills. In addition:

- To stand, sit, or walk for up to four continuous hours
- COMMUNICATION: To communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing to the high school grade level
- SMELL: Discern a variety of odors including hazardous fumes.
- HEARING: To hear/perceive the nature of sound with no less than 40 dB loss @ Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz with or without correction
- TOUCH: To perform grasping and repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers
- LIFTING: To occasionally carry or lift program materials of up to 15 pounds. (i.e. clients’ belongings, etc.)
- VISION: To see with a minimum standard of visual acuity, with or without correction, that will enable people in the role to complete administrative and clerical tasks and visually observe clients on the unit and in therapeutic activities. Ability to distinguish colors
- HOLDS: To occasionally assist in the physical management of clients, requiring bending, stooping, twisting, grasping and lifting of up to 65 pounds from a squat.
- BIOHAZARDS: To appropriately handle biohazardous/infectious waste on an occasional basis in accordance with safety policies and training
