As we enter our 2026-27 program year (September-May), the Church of St. Mary the Virgin is seeking candidates for the position of seasonal evening sexton. A church sexton is a custodian, who is charged with keeping the church and parish buildings clean and prepared for services, meetings, ready to welcome parishioners, visitors and members of the public.
This is a seasonal role, with an ideal start date of Tuesday, September 8th (this can be flexible if needed). This position will be needed through the end of May 2027.
Saint Mary the Virgin is a landmarked building located in Times Square. The complex, taken as a whole, includes four separate structures. In addition to daily church services, the Church plays host to a number of support groups (AA, DA, OA and others), as well as rehearsals and performance by various performing arts groups and organizations throughout the year. Several members of the church staff and their families live on the premises.
The Church is seeking a candidate who:
Is able to climb the many stairs throughout the complex and able to lift up to 50 pounds;
Is comfortable interacting with members of the congregation, members of the public who enter the church, and representatives from all groups using the building in a professional manner, as he/she/they serves as the representative of the Church.
His/her/their specific duties include:
- Helping to maintain order within the Sanctuary of the Church, making sure all guests including tourists, visitors, and members of the homeless community are following established rules and policies. These duties involve interacting with people in a calm and welcoming, but also clear and firm way;
- Cleaning and maintaining the various spaces throughout the complex, including the church itself, meeting rooms, parish hall, kitchen, bathrooms, offices and other areas as assigned;
- Closing and securing the church once rehearsals/events are complete, including arming the alarm systems, securing necessary locks, and ensuring all outside groups have vacated the premises;
- Assist in setting up/breaking down events, including moving chairs, preparing the rented space, and answering any questions rental groups may have (note that anything brought in by outside groups is their responsibility, the sexton is only responsible for moving church property);
- Removing trash and recycling from both inside and outside the building as needed, and placing trash on the curb for pickup on specified evenings;
- Cleaning the sidewalks, steps and exterior areas of the church on both 46th and 47th Streets;
- Assisting and monitoring the needs of TV and film crews that utilize the church for holding actors and crew (sometimes these events require an overnight stay);
- Preparing for services, including working with acolytes and servers, handling sacred vessels and candles and occasionally taking up collection as needed;
- Assisting clergy, staff and members of the congregation as requested.
