Full Job Description

Position Overview

The Programs Director owns the design, administration, and continuous improvement of SSA's student-facing programs. While our two campus organizing staff maintain direct relationships with student chapter leaders across the country, our Programs Director oversees our campus organizing strategy, as well as the tools and systems we use to carry out this work.

This includes leading the planning and execution of our annual national conference; administering scholarship and stipend programs; managing relationships with grassroots organizing staff of partner organizations; and overseeing the impact and efficacy of our organizing work (providing guidance and support to our campus organizing staff as needed). This is a role for someone who thinks in systems, takes pride in programs that run well, and understands organizing (both generally and on campuses).

Key Responsibilities

Program Administration and Oversight

Lead the planning and execution of SSA's annual national conference, including venue management, speaker engagement, programming, logistics, and post-event evaluation.
Manage event-related systems such as registration, applications, and communications
Administer the scholarship program, including managing the application and selection process, coordinating with selection committees, and maintaining sponsor relationships.
Oversee the Speakers Bureau, Stipend Program, and Chapter Project Grants, ensuring each program operates efficiently and serves student needs.
Monitor and evaluate programs continuously, identifying opportunities to improve effectiveness, alignment with SSA's mission, and potential areas for new program development.

Campus Organizing

Provide programmatic direction and quality oversight to campus organizing staff, ensuring chapter support activities are consistent, effective, and mission-aligned.
Oversee and maintain systems supporting campus organizing, including web platforms, forms, and program resources
Develop and implement new programs, tools, and resources to better serve student communities
Serve as a resource and backup for campus organizers when additional capacity is needed.
Support the initiation and development of new chapters as needed.

External Partnerships & Movement Building

Develop and maintain relationships with partner organizations inside and outside the secular movement to extend SSA's reach and deepen its impact.
Represent SSA at events and conferences as directed.
Advance SSA’s commitment to inclusive, intersectional engagement across diverse campuses

Organizational Leadership

Contribute to organizational strategic planning and goal setting
Align campus organizing initiatives with SSA’s strategic plan and priorities
Monitor and evaluate progress toward departmental and organizational goals
Collaborate with leadership on budgeting and long-term program development

Note that to carry out these responsibilities, the Programs Director will often need to work with and through our two existing campus organizing staff. However this position lacks formal responsibility for staff management (e.g., performance reviews) so that it can remain focused on supporting and executing our important programmatic work.

Qualifications

Demonstrated success managing programs, events, or initiatives from conception through execution.
Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple programs and priorities simultaneously.
Minimum of 4 years of experience in non-profit program administration, campus organizing, or a related field.
Experience with student-specific or intersectional organizing preferred.
Self-directed and highly organized, with strong attention to detail and follow-through.
Comfortable working in a fast-moving, mission-driven environment where priorities can shift and no task is too small.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Experience with digital communications, social media strategy, and web content development.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace; comfort with database and CRM platforms.
Bachelor's degree required; additional education or training in organizing, communications, or a related field is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $85,000 to $95,000, commensurate with experience (full-time, exempt position).
100% employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and life insurance (for employee).
401K retirement plan with a 100% employer match up to 5% of your salary, vesting after six months of employment.
Fifteen days of paid vacation time per year, and paid sick leave accrued on a pro-rata basis.
Twelve paid holidays per year.
An annual budget for professional development.

Work Environment

SSA is a small, high-impact organization where everyone plays a meaningful role in advancing our mission. We have a small office in Pasadena, not far from the Metro’s A Line; free parking is available. This is a full-time, hybrid position (we work from home on Fridays). Note that occasional travel is required for conferences, events, and partner engagement; evening or weekend work may be required during peak periods.
