Remote – United States | Full-Time
Salary: $95,000–$110,000, depending on experience, plus potential performance-based bonus
Required core availability: 6:00–10:00 a.m. Mountain Time
About the firm
The firm is a fully remote accounting, tax, and CFO advisory firm serving growth-focused law firm owners across the United States. We help our clients build stronger, more profitable businesses through accurate financial reporting, proactive tax strategy, and strategic financial guidance.
We are looking for a hands-on Financial Reporting Manager who can lead our financial reporting department, develop the team, strengthen our systems, and take full ownership of accurate and timely financial statement delivery.
The Opportunity
This is an opportunity to do more than inherit an existing process. You will have meaningful authority to shape how the department operates, improve workflows, establish standards, implement technology, and build a stronger and more scalable financial reporting function.
You will lead approximately seven accountants and bookkeepers supporting our clients with monthly financial statements. You will own the quality, timeliness, capacity, workflow, and day-to-day management of financial reporting across all accounting clients.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You must be technically strong enough to review and correct financial statements, resolve complex accounting issues, and step into difficult work when necessary. However, the long-term expectation is not ongoing firefighting. Your responsibility will be to build the systems, processes, and team capabilities that allow the department to operate consistently and proactively.
What You Will Own
- Accurate and timely delivery of financial statements across all accounting clients
- Month-end close schedules, client assignments, team capacity, and workload allocation
- Final review of balance sheets, income statements, cash flow reports, and reconciliations
- Resolution of complex accounting, reconciliation, and historical cleanup issues
- Leadership, coaching, and performance management of accountants and bookkeepers
- Client communication regarding accounting questions, missing information, deadlines, and service concerns
- New-client accounting onboarding and cleanup projects
- Financial reporting procedures, workflows, documentation, and quality-control standards
- Department KPIs, including on-time delivery, backlog, quality, capacity, and client escalations
- The weekly Financial Reporting Operations Meeting and client operations tracker
- The financial reporting technology stack, including QuickBooks Online, Karbon workflows, reporting tools, integrations, and automation
- Identification of out-of-scope work and pricing or service recommendations in partnership with the owner
Your Decision-Making Authority
You will have the authority to:
- Redesign financial reporting workflows and processes
- Rebalance client assignments and team capacity
- Establish department standards and close procedures
- Address performance concerns and recommend staffing changes
- Implement approved technology and process improvements
- Create recovery plans for overdue or at-risk client work
- Resolve most accounting-related client concerns and service issues
- Recommend changes to team structure, staffing, and departmental operations
What We Are Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting
- At least five years of progressive accounting experience
- At least two years of experience managing or leading accountants and/or bookkeepers
- Strong financial statement preparation and review skills
- Significant month-end close experience
- Experience managing balance sheet reconciliations
- Experience preparing and reviewing cash flow reporting
- Advanced QuickBooks Online experience
- Strong technical accounting knowledge and problem-solving ability
- Demonstrated success managing multiple clients, deadlines, and competing priorities
- Strong written and verbal client communication skills
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment
- Availability to work from 6:00–10:00 a.m. Mountain Time to collaborate with our distributed team
Strongly Preferred
- Public accounting firm experience
- Experience managing a remote or distributed accounting team
- Experience leading a recurring, multi-client financial reporting function
- Experience improving close processes, accounting workflows, and quality-control systems
- Experience with workflow management and financial reporting platforms
- Experience handling client escalations and difficult service conversations
Law firm accounting and trust or IOLTA accounting experience are not required and can be taught. A CPA license is not required.
You May Be a Strong Fit If You
- Take ownership without waiting to be asked
- Identify risks and communicate them before deadlines are missed
- Bring solutions and recovery plans, not only explanations
- Are comfortable addressing difficult client and employee issues
- Can manage a high volume of recurring deadlines without losing control of the details
- Understand how to build systems that prevent recurring problems
- Can coach a team while maintaining clear standards and accountability
- Are willing to step into technical work when needed but remain focused on building a department that does not depend on constant intervention
What Success Looks Like
Within the first 90 days, we expect the Financial Reporting Manager to establish clear client ownership and deadlines, assess overdue work, implement recovery plans, understand team capacity, strengthen financial statement review, and ensure most financial statements are being delivered on time.
Within six months, financial reporting should be consistently accurate and timely, the backlog should be substantially eliminated, client issues should be handled proactively, and the department should be operating through reliable workflows, clear KPIs, and accountable leadership.
