Position Overview
Tony Grimaldi Design is seeking an experienced Florida Registered Landscape Architect (RLA) for a long-term independent consulting relationship.
Tony Grimaldi Design prepares landscape plans, hardscape plans, irrigation plans, and landscape lighting plans. Projects are developed internally before being submitted to the consulting RLA for professional review.
The RLA's involvement is focused on the Landscape Plan and Hardscape Plan requiring landscape architectural review and professional signature and seal.
Detailed hardscape construction and structural details are reviewed, signed, and sealed separately by a structural engineer and are not the responsibility of the consulting RLA.
We are looking for a dependable Florida RLA who can become familiar with our plans and workflow and establish an efficient, long-term professional relationship with the studio.
Primary Responsibilities
- Review the applicable Landscape Plan and Hardscape Plan prepared by Tony Grimaldi Design.
- Provide professional comments or redlines when revisions are necessary.
- Review revised plans as needed.
- Maintain appropriate professional supervisory involvement over documents for which the RLA assumes responsibility.
- Apply the RLA's Florida digital signature and professional seal once professionally satisfied with the applicable documents.
- Communicate primarily through email, PDF markups, and digital correspondence.
- Maintain a reasonable and dependable review turnaround, generally targeted at 3–5 business days for a typical plan set.
- Be available for occasional professional consultation when questions arise.
Scope of RLA Review
Tony Grimaldi Design handles the project's design development and prepares the plans before they are presented for professional review.
The consulting RLA will review:
Landscape Plan
Hardscape Plan
Tony Grimaldi Design also prepares irrigation and landscape lighting plans as part of its project services. The specific documents requiring the RLA's professional involvement will be established for each project.
Structural Engineering Is Separate
Detailed hardscape construction and structural components are reviewed independently by the project's structural engineer.
The structural engineer, not the consulting RLA, is responsible for reviewing, signing, and sealing applicable structural construction details.
The consulting RLA is not being hired to perform structural engineering review or assume responsibility for structural engineering documents.
What This Position Does NOT Require
The consulting RLA is generally not responsible for:
- Creating the original landscape or hardscape design.
- Developing the project's aesthetic concept.
- Producing the initial CAD drawings.
- Preparing detailed hardscape construction or structural engineering details.
- Reviewing or sealing structural engineering documents.
- Routine client communication or client management.
- Sales or business-development activities.
- Routine client presentations.
- Full-time employment.
- Set office hours.
- Working from the Tony Grimaldi Design office.
- Exclusivity with Tony Grimaldi Design.
Tony Grimaldi Design handles the design process, plan preparation, client relationship, and normal project coordination.
Candidate Requirements
- Active Florida Registered Landscape Architect license in good standing.
- Legally able to sign and seal applicable landscape architectural documents in Florida.
- Active Professional Liability / Errors & Omissions insurance appropriate for the professional services being provided.
- Professional experience reviewing landscape architectural plans.
- Comfortable providing comments and redlines when changes are required.
- Comfortable with electronic plan review, PDF markups, email, and Florida digital signatures/seals.
- Responsive, dependable, and professional.
- Willing to develop familiarity with Tony Grimaldi Design's plans and drawing standards.
- AutoCAD familiarity is helpful but not required for the normal review process.
Ideal Candidate
This opportunity could be an excellent fit for:
- An established Florida RLA interested in additional consulting income.
- A semi-retired RLA who would like to remain professionally active.
- An experienced RLA interested in a relatively small and predictable annual project volume.
- An RLA with an existing practice or employment who is permitted to perform outside consulting work.
- Someone who enjoys professional plan review without taking on the complete design, drafting, and client-management responsibilities of a traditional project.
The goal is to find one experienced, dependable Florida professional with whom we can develop a long-term working relationship.
Compensation
This is an independent professional consulting relationship rather than a salaried employment position.
Annual Retainer — $5,000
The annual retainer maintains the RLA's ongoing consulting relationship and priority availability to Tony Grimaldi Design.
Per-Project Fee — $500–$1,500
A flat professional review fee will be established before each project begins, generally ranging from $500 to $1,500, depending upon the size of the plan set and anticipated level of professional involvement.
The fee covers the agreed professional review, reasonable comments/redlines, review of normal revisions, and final signature and seal when the RLA determines that the documents are satisfactory.
If a particular project unexpectedly requires services substantially outside the normal scope, those services and any additional compensation will be discussed and agreed upon before the additional work is performed.
Non-Exclusive Relationship
This relationship is non-exclusive.
The consulting RLA is free to maintain an independent practice, employment, or other consulting relationships consistent with applicable professional requirements and conflict-of-interest obligations.
We are interested in reliability and continuity — not exclusivity.
Independent Professional Judgment
The RLA retains independent professional judgment regarding any document bearing the RLA's signature and seal.
The RLA may request reasonable revisions or additional information necessary to become professionally comfortable with the documents.
No RLA working with Tony Grimaldi Design will be expected to sign or seal a document the RLA is not professionally satisfied with.
Working Relationship
1. Tony Grimaldi Design develops the project and prepares the plans.
2. The Landscape Plan and Hardscape Plan are provided to the consulting RLA for review.
3. The RLA provides any necessary professional comments or redlines.
4. Tony Grimaldi Design makes the requested revisions.
5. The RLA completes the final professional review and, when satisfied, digitally signs and seals the applicable documents.
6. Detailed hardscape construction and structural details are handled separately by the structural engineer.
Most communication can be handled electronically.
Agreement Terms
- Independent contractor / professional consultant relationship.
- $5,000 annual retainer.
- $500–$1,500 predetermined flat fee per applicable project.
- Approximately 10–15 projects annually requiring RLA involvement based on current anticipated volume.
- Primarily remote.
- Non-exclusive.
- Target review turnaround of approximately 3–5 business days for typical plan sets.
- Standard 30-day written notice provision for termination by either party.
