Senior Specialist – Operations Procedure Consultant

Location: New York City, NY
Work Arrangement: Remote with occasional onsite meetings/site visits
Job Type: Part-Time, As-Needed Contract
Hours: Approximately 24 hours/week, as needed
Pay Rate: $70–$80/hour

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Operations Procedure Consultant to support an ongoing initiative focused on reviewing, updating, and developing operating procedures for a major utility organization.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced utility operations professional, including a retired or semi-retired industry professional, who has extensive hands-on knowledge of utility operations and can translate real-world operational experience into clear, practical procedures.

This role is not primarily a technical writing position. The ideal candidate will bring strong operational expertise and understand how work is actually performed in the field, including sequences of operation, safety considerations, maintenance activities, and operational best practices.

The engagement is part-time and as-needed, with flexibility in scheduling as long as project deliverables are completed on time. The position is primarily remote, with occasional onsite meetings or site visits in the NYC area when in-person review is needed.

Key Responsibilities

Review and update existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Develop new operating procedures and operational guides.
Document sequences of operations for utility-related work.
Review procedures for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and practical usability.
Work directly with operations managers and field personnel to capture operational knowledge.
Validate procedures with operations leadership and subject matter experts.
Incorporate feedback from operational stakeholders into procedures.
Help improve consistency and accuracy across the organization's procedure library.
Support procedure development for Facilities, Steam, Substation, and other utility operations as projects arise.
Work independently with minimal oversight while meeting agreed-upon deadlines.

The strongest candidates will have hands-on utility operations experience and a strong understanding of real-world operating practices.

Field operating procedures
Maintenance procedures
Utility safety and operating practices

Qualifications

10+ years of utility operations experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of utility operating practices and field procedures.
Ability to understand and document complex operational processes.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively with operations managers, field personnel, and subject matter experts.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to independently organize work and meet deadlines.
Comfortable working remotely with occasional onsite requirements.
Local New York City / New York candidates preferred.

Example of the Work

A typical project may involve reviewing and developing procedures related to the installation and operation of mobile electric generators providing temporary power at a utility facility.

Similar projects may support Facilities, Steam, Substation, and other utility operations. The consultant will use their operational expertise to ensure procedures accurately reflect how work is performed and can be clearly understood and followed by field and operations personnel.
