About Action Underwriting, LLC

Action Underwriting (AU) is a specialty commercial managing general agent (MGA) focused exclusively on the sporting goods industry. AU underwrites commercial property and commercial general liability for small and mid-sized firearms manufacturers, ranges, and large retail outlets across the hunting and shooting sector.

We operate with delegated underwriting authority on behalf of our carrier partners, which means our underwriters own their decisions. There is no committee between a good risk and a bound policy.

The Opportunity

We are hiring a Commercial Underwriter to underwrite and grow a book of monoline and package property and casualty business within our program. This is a hands-on production underwriting role: you will own submissions end to end, from broker intake through risk selection, pricing, structuring, quoting, binding, and renewal. You will work directly with our leadership team on appetite, pricing adequacy, and program performance.

What You’ll Do

● Underwrite new business and renewal submissions for commercial property and commercial general liability risks, primarily SME manufacturing operations and large retail outlets, within delegated authority and program guidelines.

● Perform full risk analysis: loss history and loss trend review, exposure and hazard identification, COPE analysis, occupancy and protection classification, business interruption and time-element exposure evaluation, product liability and premises liability assessment, and contractual risk transfer review.

● Determine pricing using rating plans, exposure-based and experience-based methodologies, ITV/valuation adequacy, and judgment where the data is thin — and be able to defend your number.

● Structure coverage, limits, deductibles/retentions, sublimits, endorsements, and exclusions to produce a technically sound, profitable, and marketable product.

● Order, review, and act on loss control and risk engineering reports; drive recommendations to completion with insureds and brokers.

● Negotiate terms, conditions, and pricing directly with retail and wholesale brokers; communicate declinations with a clear rationale that preserves the relationship and the submission flow.

● Manage and grow assigned broker and agency relationships, including pipeline management, hit-ratio improvement, and submission-quality coaching.

● Document files to audit standard, meeting carrier partner and reinsurer requirements for referral, authority compliance, and file quality.

● Monitor portfolio metrics — loss ratio, rate change, retention, new business production, average premium, and mix of business — and flag adverse trends early.

● Contribute to appetite refinement, guideline development, pricing model improvement, and product enhancement as the program grows.

● Partner with claims, actuarial, and program management on large losses, reserve reviews, and emerging exposure trends.

● Represent [Company Name] at industry events and in the sporting goods trade community.

What You BringRequired

● Minimum 3 years of commercial insurance underwriting experience at a carrier, MGA, program administrator, or E&S wholesaler.

● Demonstrated experience underwriting both property and casualty risks — not property-only or GL-only. You should be comfortable pricing and structuring a package.

● Direct underwriting experience with SME manufacturing risks (product liability exposure, machinery and equipment, production processes, supply chain and dependent property exposure, completed operations).

● Direct underwriting experience with large retail outlet risks (large-footprint premises liability, slip-and-fall frequency, high-value stock and inventory exposure, seasonality, multi-location schedules, business interruption).

● Strong technical command of commercial property forms and commercial general liability forms, including ISO forms, common endorsements, and manuscript wording.

● Proven ability to underwrite within delegated authority, recognize when a risk must be referred, and adhere to guidelines without needing to be managed toward them.

● Excellent broker-facing communication and negotiation skills; you can say no clearly and still get the next submission.

● Sound independent judgment and accountability for results. This is a remote role with real authority — self-direction is a requirement, not a preference.

● Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent underwriting experience in lieu of a degree.

● Proficiency with underwriting workbenches / policy administration systems and standard rating tools; strong Excel skills.

Preferred

● Underwriting experience with insureds in the outdoor and sporting goods industry — firearms and ammunition, archery, hunting and fishing, camping and outdoor gear, athletic and fitness equipment, marine and powersports, or sporting goods retail.

● Experience in an MGA, program, or delegated authority environment, including working within carrier and reinsurer treaty parameters.

● Experience underwriting excess and surplus lines business and familiarity with surplus lines compliance.

● Professional designations: CPCU, CIC, ARM, AU, or CRIS (or active pursuit thereof).

● Experience building or improving underwriting guidelines, appetite documents, or pricing models.

● Multi-state licensing and familiarity with Texas commercial market dynamics.

● Based in or near Austin or San Antonio, Texas — we have a concentration of team and partner activity in Central and South Texas.
