SUMMARY: Represents BYK NA region as an expert in the Wood & Furniture Coatings. Has a primary business responsibility for working with customers & strategic key accounts in these markets. Helps develop and implement the objectives/strategy for the N.A. Wood end use. Coordinates all strategy directives and activities from BYK Corporate and/or Global End Use Manager. Supports the North American Paint Business Line Manager, Key Account Managers, Regional Technical Sales Representatives and Distribution partners. Supports Business Growth Opportunities (BGO’s) for their (the respective) end use.
This position requires regular interfacing with customers, internal sales, marketing and laboratory staff, as well as effective communication with global colleagues. Developing new strategies and offering customized solutions for product development to customers & key accounts. Monitor market trends, sales and competitive activity to drive business growth and seize opportunities. Assist customers with product requirements, product recommendations, technical issues, and new product development projects. Act as a liaison between internal support departments and the technical group.
KEY CAPABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE:
- Demonstrated understanding of Wood & Furniture Coatings markets and technologies within North America.
- Diverse knowledge of Wood Finishing formulations and application systems, methods and terminology to include, but not limited to: spray application, automated spray, robotic spray, reciprocating spray, roll coat, curtain coat, vacuum coat, dip coat, flood coat, as well as, understanding of heat and UV cured coating systems.
- Wood Coatings formulation experience for aqueous, solvent and solvent-free systems.
- Proven ability for focused problems solving; the ability to understand customer and/or internal challenges to include root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions in wood coatings and wood preservation systems as required
- Familiar with BYK additives & competitive additives, including strengths and weaknesses.
- Understands global and regional requirements of customers and reacts accordingly.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement strategy for the End uses Wood & Furniture Coatings in North America in coordination with the Global Wood End Use Manager.
- Identify and help develop business growth opportunities (BGO’s) together with sales team and KA managers
- Develop and implement the strategy for Key Accounts, in close cooperation with Key Account Managers and global End use manager
- Monitor market trends, sales and competitive activity
- Technical interface with customers, internal sales, marketing and laboratory staff as well as global colleagues
- Support the customers in NA with regular communication and joint sales visits (virtual and in person).
- Provide technical support for Key Accounts and strategic customers (S, A customers)
- Support and technical training of distributors
- Introduce new products and provide technical training to technical service lab and sales team
- Coordinate customer related activities with the BYK sales team and the technical service team, e.g. technical discussions, problem solving, product recommendations, joint projects, seminars, technical service work in BYK´s technical service lab
- Cooperate closely with the technical service laboratory, including regular visits in the lab and technical contact person for the lab team
- Monitor the product portfolio of the End uses Wood & Furniture Coatings in NA, including introduction of new ideas for product developments
- Deliver product and theory-based lectures to customers and related technical societies
- Closely interact with the Global Head of End use Wood & Furniture Coatings in strategic, technical, research and customer related topics
- Lead End use Specialist - Wood & Furniture Coatings
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Communicate effectively with customers and coworkers
- Communicate cross-functionally within the BYK and ALTANA organizations.
- Must be able to drive a car and fly on a plane, coping with conditions of extensive, international and overnight travel.
- Able to speak technically about the respective markets.
- Able to perform laboratory functions and assist customers in their labs as needed.
- Create and provide technical presentations to external and internal audiences.
- Stay relevant within the NA Wood & Furniture Coatings and Industrial Wood Protection industry/market; and, stay connected with key industry trade organizations and events like: KCMA, Surfaces, IWF, AHFA, BIFMA, GREENGUARD, AWPA
- Knowledgeable of the final Wood & Furniture Coatings end use customer(s) and their markets served
- Ability to “sell” Wood & Furniture Coatings Technical Service Lab as a “calling card” to customers in order to strengthen partnerships with strategic customers.
- Aptitude to identify & act upon market needs or development opportunities of new additives in order to support strategic sales growth for BYK in both the NA & global Wood coating additive market.
- Demonstrate a sense of urgency
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Technical background in the respective field
- College degree required
- Previous experience in Wood coatings and/or coating technologies
