Full Job Description

You know how to read a job cost report and tell whether a builder is actually making money. Most of the people around you don't. We're hiring the person who does.

Sure Home CFO is an outsourced accounting and CFO firm for construction and home service businesses doing $2M–$10M a year. Our clients build homes, remodel kitchens, install HVAC, run service crews. They're excellent at their trade. They need someone excellent at the numbers.

As a Construction Controller, you're the financial leader for a portfolio of those businesses. You sit across from the owner and tell them what the numbers mean and what to do about it. You own the relationship, the systems, and the outcome.

You are not doing every keystroke. A Bookkeeping Specialist handles AP, AR, reconciliations, payroll processing, and day-to-day coding for your clients. What that support can't do is think for you — decide how a cost structure should be built, catch a job that's quietly losing money, or sit in front of an owner and explain what has to change. You're freed from the keystrokes so you can spend your time on architecture, oversight, and client leadership.

What you'll own

Client leadership. Monthly meetings with owners. Financials presented in plain language. Budgets and cash flow forecasts. Flagging margin erosion, pricing problems, and cash timing risk before the owner asks.

Systems architecture. New client onboarding end to end — scoping and running cleanup, rebuilding the chart of accounts and cost code structure, migrating clients onto our stack (QBO Advanced, Ramp, Bill.com, Gusto), and connecting field platforms like BuilderTrend, JobTread, Procore, Jobber, Housecall Pro, or ServiceTitan to QBO. When the systems disagree, it's yours.

Oversight. Review your Bookkeeping Specialist's work. Make sure COGS and job-level margin are real. Own cost-plus billing setup, job cost reports, and WIP schedules before they reach the owner.

This is a fit if

You've personally run a company's books from bank feed to financial statements, in construction or trades
You're an advanced QBO user who has configured, cleaned up, and rebuilt files — not just entered transactions into one
You've reviewed or supervised someone else's bookkeeping and are comfortable being the reviewer
You hold a standard without anyone enforcing it
You can hold a direct conversation with an owner about something that isn't going well

This is not a fit if

You want to spend most of your time doing transactional bookkeeping yourself
Your construction accounting is all large-ERP (Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, CMiC) with no hands-on QBO
You want one company's books and predictable rhythms — multi-client means competing deadlines and constant context switching
You're not comfortable holding someone accountable for the quality of their work

Requirements

5+ years hands-on accounting, significant time in construction, trades, or project-based work
Advanced QuickBooks Online, including QBO Advanced and Projects/job costing
Working knowledge of job costing, cost code structures, COGS classification, cost-plus contract accounting
Solid GAAP command as it applies to small and mid-sized construction businesses
Excellent written and verbal communication

Preferred: outsourced/fractional CFO or multi-client experience · supervising or reviewing a bookkeeper · Ramp, Bill.com, Gusto · integrating QBO with BuilderTrend, JobTread, Procore, Jobber, Housecall Pro, Houzz Pro, D-Tools, or ServiceTitan · Accounting or Finance degree and/or CPA/CMA.

We weight demonstrated hands-on capability more heavily than credentials.

Compensation

$100,000 – $125,000 depending on experience
Profit sharing
