About Miller Contracting
Miller Contracting is a specialty contractor headquartered in Carrier Mills, Illinois. We serve the mining and industrial construction industries with underground construction, fabrication, hoisting and equipment services, and concrete and structural work. Our crews work in some of the most demanding environments in the industry — and the people we hire take pride in that. We value technical skill, reliability, and a team-first approach.
Position Overview
Miller Contracting is looking for a Steel Structure Supervisor to lead steel erection and structural crews on active mining and industrial job sites. This is a project-based field leadership role for a foreman who works independently, leads with accountability, and takes ownership of crew performance, quality, and safety. The Foreman reports to the Project Superintendent and is responsible for the daily execution of the work in the field — planning the shift, directing the crew, holding the schedule, and keeping the job safe and inspection-ready. Candidates who hold current MSHA certification are preferred; Miller Contracting will support MSHA training and site-specific certification for qualified hires who do not yet have it.
What You'll Do
- Lead and supervise steel structure and erection crews
- Plan daily work and assign tasks based on project schedules
- Read and interpret structural drawings, blueprints, and specifications
- Oversee steel erection, connection, and structural installation work
- Run daily safety briefings and enforce MSHA/OSHA requirements
- Coordinate with Project Managers, Superintendents, and other trades
- Coordinate rigging, hoisting, and crane operations, including lift planning and load control
- Inspect connections, bolting, and welding for compliance with drawings, specifications, and code
- Track manpower, materials, and equipment needs and report daily production to the Superintendent
- Mentor and develop crew members, including ironworkers, welders, and apprentices
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience in a supervisory role in steel structure or industrial construction
- Ability to lead crews and work independently
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings and blueprints
- Strong understanding of MSHA/OSHA safety standards
- Willing and able to travel to project locations
- OSHA 30 or equivalent training preferred
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
- MSHA Part 46 and/or Part 48 certification preferred
- 5+ years of steel erection experience, including at least 2 in a lead or foreman role
- Rigging and signalperson qualification preferred
- Working knowledge of welding procedures and structural bolting requirements
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to project sites
Physical Requirements
This is a physically demanding field role performed on active mining and industrial construction sites. Reasonable accommodation will be considered in accordance with applicable law. On a typical shift, you must be able to:
- Stand, walk, and climb on uneven ground, steel, ladders, and scaffolding for the duration of the shift
- Work at heights and from elevated platforms and aerial lifts while using fall protection
- Frequently lift, carry, and position materials weighing up to 75 pounds, with occasional team lifts of heavier loads
- Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, and reach overhead repeatedly throughout the day
- Maintain balance and footing on beams, decking, and other elevated surfaces
- Operate hand and power tools involving repetitive gripping and exposure to vibration
- Wear all required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, harness, and hearing or respiratory protection as site conditions require
- Tolerate extended exposure to heat, cold, dust, noise, and changing weather conditions
- Complete pre-employment and site-required drug screening, and any physical examination required for site access
Work Environment
Project-based assignments at active mining and industrial construction sites, including surface and underground facilities. Work is performed in outdoor and unconditioned environments with exposure to heavy equipment, cranes, noise, dust, vibration, and varying weather. All crews operate under MSHA and OSHA requirements, and site-specific safety orientation and training are required before beginning work. Miller Contracting maintains a zero-tolerance policy for unsafe work practices, and foremen are expected to set the standard for the crew.
Travel & Schedule
Full-time, field-aligned hours. Schedules follow the project and may include extended shifts, early starts, and occasional weekend or shutdown work to meet milestones. Travel to project locations is required, and assignments may involve staying near the job site for the duration of the project. Per diem of $150 per day is provided for qualifying travel assignments.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive wages based on experience
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with profit sharing
- Paid time off
- Per diem for qualifying travel assignments ($150 per day)
