Through our Born for Nia Maternity Home and behavioral health programs, we provide supportive services that empower youth, young adults, and families to achieve stability, wellness, and independence. We are seeking a detail-oriented and compliance-driven Medi-Cal Billing Specialist to support our behavioral health and residential programs.

Position Summary

The Medi-Cal Billing Specialist is responsible for the accurate and timely submission, reconciliation, and monitoring of Medi-Cal claims for specialty mental health and residential treatment services. This position works closely with clinical, administrative, and finance staff to ensure compliance with California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health (DBH), Medi-Cal, and agency policies.

The ideal candidate has experience with behavioral health billing, strong analytical skills, and a commitment to maintaining the integrity of the agency's reimbursement process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare, review, and submit Medi-Cal claims accurately and within required deadlines.
Monitor claim status and resolve denied, rejected, or unpaid claims.
Verify documentation supports services billed and identify documentation deficiencies.
Collaborate with clinical and program staff to ensure accurate coding and billing.
Reconcile payments, adjustments, and remittance advice.
Maintain billing reports, productivity data, and reimbursement tracking.
Assist with internal audits, external audits, and quality assurance activities.
Ensure compliance with DHCS, San Bernardino County DBH, HIPAA, and agency policies.
Report billing discrepancies and assist in identifying and correcting overpayments.
Stay informed of changes in Medi-Cal billing regulations and participate in required trainings.
Maintain strict confidentiality of client and agency information.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum QualificationsEducation

High school diploma or GED required.
Associate degree in Medical Billing, Health Information Management, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.

Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of medical billing experience.
At least one (1) year of California Medi-Cal billing experience, preferably in behavioral health.
Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems required; MyAvatar experience is highly desirable.
Experience with county-contracted behavioral health or STRTP programs is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of California Medi-Cal billing regulations and behavioral health reimbursement.
Understanding of DHCS and San Bernardino County DBH billing requirements.
Familiarity with ICD-10 diagnosis coding and applicable CPT/HCPCS coding.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Commitment to ethical billing practices and regulatory compliance.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Professional Biller (CPB), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or similar certification preferred.
Experience with behavioral health compliance audits.
Experience working with nonprofit organizations and trauma-informed service providers.
