Operations Manager – Transportation, Trucking & Medical Courier Operations

Position Summary

The Operations Manager serves as the senior operational leader for the Portsmouth market and is responsible for overseeing a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year transportation operation. This role provides strategic leadership and day-to-day oversight of both medical courier services and commercial trucking operations, including courier vehicles, cargo vans, box trucks, and DOT-regulated commercial vehicles.

The successful candidate will ensure operational excellence, regulatory compliance, employee development, customer satisfaction, financial performance, and continuous operational improvement while supporting the company's growth initiatives.

The ideal candidate is a proven transportation leader who can successfully manage people, processes, customer relationships, and business performance in a fast-paced logistics environment.

Primary Responsibilities

As the Operations Manager, you will:

Lead all daily transportation, trucking, and medical courier operations throughout the Portsmouth market.
Oversee operations involving courier vehicles, cargo vans, box trucks, and DOT-regulated commercial vehicles.
Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, train, coach, mentor, and develop drivers, dispatch personnel, supervisors, and operational staff.
Ensure full compliance with DOT regulations, FMCSA requirements, OSHA standards, HIPAA requirements, company policies, customer requirements, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Oversee driver qualification files, Hours of Service compliance, vehicle inspections, safety programs, DOT audits, and transportation regulatory compliance.
Develop and maintain strong customer relationships by delivering exceptional service and proactively resolving operational issues.
Monitor operational Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including:
On-time delivery
Route efficiency
Driver productivity
Customer satisfaction
Safety performance
Attendance
Fleet utilization
Financial performance
Analyze operational data to improve efficiencies, reduce costs, maximize productivity, and drive continuous improvement.
Manage staffing levels, scheduling, labor utilization, dispatch operations, route optimization, and fleet resources.
Conduct employee coaching, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, and leadership development.
Lead investigations involving accidents, DOT incidents, customer complaints, service failures, safety concerns, and employee relations issues while ensuring appropriate documentation and corrective action.
Partner with Human Resources, Safety, Recruiting, Payroll, Fleet Maintenance, and Executive Leadership to achieve operational goals.
Prepare operational reports, staffing forecasts, budgets, and performance metrics.
Participate in customer meetings, contract implementations, operational reviews, and business development initiatives.
Ensure all company vehicles, trailers, equipment, operational assets, and facilities are properly maintained and utilized efficiently.
Respond to operational emergencies, customer escalations, and after-hours business needs when required.

Additional Responsibilities

Support the successful launch of new customer accounts and transportation contracts.
Assist with regional expansion initiatives and operational growth.
Conduct facility audits, driver ride-alongs, safety observations, fleet inspections, and quality assurance reviews.
Participate in strategic planning, forecasting, and budgeting.
Support recruiting initiatives through interviews, hiring events, and community outreach.
Promote employee engagement, accountability, retention, and a culture centered on safety and operational excellence.
Serve as acting regional leadership when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates will possess:

Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, or a related field (or equivalent leadership experience).
Five (5) or more years of progressive operations management experience.

Pharmaceutical Logistics
Healthcare Transportation
Last-Mile Delivery
Distribution
Transportation Management
Experience leading operations with 50+ employees.
Previous responsibility for operational budgets and P&L performance.
Experience with:
Workday
Samsara
Transportation Management Systems (TMS)
GPS Fleet Management Software
CRM Platforms
OSHA, HIPAA, DOT, or Transportation Safety certifications.
Experience managing dedicated transportation or contract logistics accounts.
