SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision of the Department Manager performs the full array of duties related to the operation of complex heavy motorized street sweeping equipment to provide clean streets and other public areas; inspects sweeper and auxiliary equipment; assists in performing other street maintenance duties as assigned, and performs other related duties as required.
IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS
The Senior Sweeper Operator is a Journeyman level class responsible for the operation of a street sweeper within an assigned area or route. This level is awarded to full-time employee’s who have completed at least 1 year at an entry level and have shown proficiency in performing their scheduled duty; adheres to all company policy/procedures and competent to fulfill their work assignments with little or no supervision.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Operates street sweepers and other related heavy equipment and tools to sweeps streets, gutters, and mediums, parking lots, courtyards and public works yard; clears debris from right-of-ways; cleans storm drains and inlets; manually clean grass areas and islands; identifies and reports hazardous conditions.
Adjusts and operates brooms, guards, and other related auxiliary equipment.
Inspects sweeper for safety and mechanical defects; checks fuel, reports the need for required maintenance; inspects auxiliary equipment for proper operating conditions and safety.
Washes and cleans sweeper and auxiliary equipment as necessary.
Performs special sweeps as necessary.
Maintains a variety of records and reports on street sweeping operations; logs daily reports.
Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment including explaining street sweeping operations.
Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, and the public.
Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge of:
Adjustment and operation of street sweeping equipment. Safe working practices related to sweeping in light to heavy traffic conditions. City geography and street locations. Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures. State and City traffic laws as they pertain to the operation of sweeping equipment. Service requirements of a motorized street sweeper. Basic record-keeping techniques. Basic office procedures, methods, and equipment.
Ability to:
Operate a street sweeper skillfully and safely. Read and understand street maps. Plan and route assigned area for efficient sweeping. Prepare basic records and reports of work performed. Perform manual labor. Safely and effectively operate a variety of specialized maintenance equipment, tools, and materials. Work independently and use sound judgment in performing assignments safely. Work irregular hours including evenings and nights. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License or Certificate:
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license. On-site training provided.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Environment: Outside environment working near moving mechanical parts; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, fumes, gases, potentially hazardous chemicals, vibrations and inclement weather conditions including wet and/or humid conditions; frequently work around loud noise levels.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability; to frequently reach, twist, grasp, walk, and bend in the performance of daily duties; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
