Circulating Nurse (RN) – Outpatient Surgery Center

Reports To: Charge Nurse / Director of Nursing
Location: Advanced Surgical Care of Viera
Employment Type: Full-Time / Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

The Circulating Nurse is a key member of the perioperative team responsible for coordinating patient care, ensuring a safe and sterile environment, and facilitating the smooth operation of surgical procedures in an outpatient surgery center with two operating rooms and one procedure room. This role requires strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct pre-operative assessments and verify patient identity, procedure, and consent prior to surgery.
Prepare and maintain the operating room for each case, ensuring all equipment, instruments, and supplies are available and functioning properly.
Monitor and document patient status throughout the perioperative process, ensuring adherence to safety and infection control standards.
Act as the patient advocate throughout the surgical experience, maintaining privacy, dignity, and safety.
Work collaboratively with the surgical technologist, anesthesia provider, and surgeon to facilitate efficient case flow.
Perform accurate surgical counts of instruments, sponges, and sharps with the scrub tech before, during, and after procedures.
Assist with positioning, prepping, and draping the patient.
Document intraoperative nursing care, implants, specimens, and equipment use according to policy and regulatory requirements.
Communicate effectively with pre-op and PACU staff to ensure continuity of care.
Participate in quality assurance, infection control, and staff education initiatives.
Support compliance with AAAASF, CMS, OSHA, and HIPAA standards.

Qualifications:

Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (BSN preferred).
Licensure: Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of [State Name].
Experience:
Minimum 1–2 years of operating room or perioperative nursing experience (outpatient or ambulatory surgery experience preferred).
Certifications:
BLS (required)
ACLS (required)
PALS (preferred)
CNOR (preferred)

Skills and Competencies:

Strong understanding of perioperative nursing principles and surgical asepsis.
Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to anticipate surgical team needs and respond effectively in urgent situations.
Commitment to patient safety, infection control, and quality improvement.
Proficiency in EMR documentation and basic computer skills.

Work Environment:

Outpatient ambulatory surgery center with two operating rooms and one procedure room.
Requires standing for extended periods and occasional lifting or positioning of patients and equipment.
Schedule based on surgical case load; may include early mornings or extended hours as needed.
