Senior Accountant / Accounting Manager / Small Business Controller (In-Office ONLY)

Location: Vernon Hills, IL
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–5pm (In Office)
Company: KidCo – Established Consumer Products Company

KidCo is a well-established manufacturer and distributor of baby safety products, serving families for over 30 years. As the retail landscape evolves, the company is in the midst of a strategic transition to expand its direct-to-consumer and multi-channel business while continuing to serve its wholesale partners focused on improving profitability, cash flow, and operational efficiency.

We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Controller to own the company’s day-to-day accounting function including financial reporting, inventory costing, and financial analysis. This is an in-office role ideal for an experienced accounting professional who is comfortable being the primary and accountable owner of the books in a small company environment.

You will work directly with ownership, supervise and support one office staff member, and coordinate with outside CPA and payroll providers. This is not a passive or oversight-only role. You will be in the details and responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the company’s financial records.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as the primary owner of the company’s books and accounting records
Perform and close the monthly books and prepare internal financial statements
Handle accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, deposits, and cash management
Perform bank, credit card, and petty cash reconciliations
Maintain inventory costing, including freight, duties, tariffs, and landed costs
Track and monitor in-transit inventory
Prepare and maintain cash flow forecasts and assist with annual budgeting and quarterly updates
Build and maintain pricing, margin, and profitability models by SKU, customer, and channel
Support ownership and sales with deal analysis, promotion analysis, and pricing decisions
Analyze channel profitability (Amazon, Walmart, wholesale, etc.) and flag unprofitable SKUs or customers
Review expenses, processes, and internal controls to improve efficiency and accuracy
Supervise and support one administrative/accounting staff member
Prepare and submit payroll information to outside payroll service (semi-monthly)
Work directly with the bank, outside accounting firm, insurance providers, and 401(k) provider
Assist with insurance renewals and coverage reviews
Track PTO, attendance, and basic HR administration
Maintain and safeguard all confidential financial information
Provide backup support for basic office administration and customer service when needed
Own and maintain the company’s accounting records within Traverse Open Systems ERP and ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data
Perform other related duties and projects as assigned by ownership

Qualifications

5+ years of hands-on accounting experience, preferably in a small or mid-sized manufacturing or distribution business
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
CPA a plus but not required
Experience working in an ERP-based accounting system (Traverse Open Systems a strong plus, but not required)
Strong Excel skills (costing models, margin analysis, forecasting)
Proven ability to work independently and own the full accounting cycle
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and accurate
Business-minded and curious about how the company actually makes (or loses) money
Comfortable in a small, hands-on company environment
Prior supervisory experience is a plus

Important Compensation Note: Compensation is based on experience and demonstrated ability with inventory accounting, ERP systems, and financial analysis in a manufacturing/distribution environment. The top of the range is reserved for candidates who bring exceptional and directly relevant experience.
