Job Title: Senior Accountant – Benefits
Department: Accounting
Reports To: Assistant Controller, Accounting Operations
Summary
The Senior Accountant – Benefits is responsible for the accounting, reconciliation, analysis, and financial reporting of employee benefit and payroll-related activities across Good Food Holdings and its operating companies. This position plays an integral role in the month-end close process and ensures benefit expenses, employee deductions, employer contributions, payroll liabilities, and related general ledger accounts are accurately recorded and supported.
Approximately 75% of this position will focus on benefits accounting, 15% on payroll accounting, and 10% on general ledger and other accounting responsibilities. The Senior Accountant – Benefits partners closely with Human Resources, Payroll, Accounts Payable, Treasury, Finance, and external benefit vendors to research discrepancies, maintain financial controls, support audits, and improve accounting processes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Benefits Accounting – Approximately 75%
- Prepare monthly benefit-related journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Reconcile medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, retirement, flexible spending, health savings, and other employee benefit accounts
- Reconcile payroll benefit deductions against vendor invoices, enrollment records, funding activity, and general ledger balances
- Review benefit vendor invoices for accuracy, completeness, proper authorization, and appropriate allocation
- Research and resolve discrepancies involving employee deductions, employer contributions, benefit invoices, eligibility records, and vendor payments
- Monitor benefit-related accrued liabilities, prepaid expenses, employee contributions, employer contributions, and balance sheet accounts
- Prepare and maintain benefit allocation schedules across legal entities, business units, departments, locations, and cost centers
- Reconcile retirement plan contributions, employer matching contributions, employee loan repayments, and related transactions
- Partner with Human Resources, Payroll, Accounts Payable, and benefit vendors to resolve billing, deduction, eligibility, and payment issues
- Analyze monthly benefit expenses and investigate unusual activity, significant variances, and unanticipated results
- Support annual enrollment activities, benefit plan changes, vendor transitions, and implementation of new benefit programs
- Assist with validating benefit deductions, accounting mappings, system interfaces, and vendor data files
- Prepare benefit-related reporting, account analysis, forecasts, budgets, and management schedules
- Support benefit plan audits, financial statement audits, compliance reviews, and regulatory reporting requirements
- Maintain organized supporting documentation for benefit invoices, reconciliations, journal entries, payments, and adjustments
Payroll Accounting – Approximately 15%
- Prepare payroll-related journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Reconcile payroll clearing accounts, wage liabilities, employee deductions, payroll taxes, and employer-related expenses
- Compare payroll reports, bank activity, payroll provider data, and general ledger balances to identify discrepancies
- Partner with Payroll to resolve wage, deduction, tax, funding, and accounting-related issues
- Support payroll-related month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities
- Assist with accounting for bonuses, incentive compensation, paid time off, and other payroll-related expenses and liabilities
- Prepare documentation and schedules for payroll audits, compliance reviews, and financial reporting requests
General Ledger Accounting – Approximately 10%
- Prepare assigned monthly general ledger journal entries and account reconciliations
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities within established deadlines
- Review general ledger activity and prepare correcting or adjusting entries when necessary
- Prepare quarterly review schedules, year-end audit schedules, and supporting documentation
- Assist with ad hoc financial reports, analyses, accounting projects, and management requests
- Provide coverage for other Accounting team responsibilities during absences or periods of increased workload
- Assist with developing and maintaining accounting policies, standard operating procedures, and process documentation
- Adhere to the Company’s Financial Integrity Policy and maintain financial confidentiality by following established internal controls
Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university
- Minimum three to five years of progressive accounting experience
- Extensive experience with month-end close, journal entries, accruals, and general ledger account reconciliations
- Experience with benefits accounting, payroll accounting, employee deductions, or payroll-to-general-ledger reconciliations strongly preferred
- Experience reviewing benefit invoices, employer contributions, employee deductions, and related balance sheet accounts preferred
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and general accounting principles
- Experience supporting financial statement audits, benefit plan audits, payroll audits, or compliance reviews preferred
- Experience in public accounting or possession of a CPA license preferred but not required
- Experience working in a multi-entity, multi-location, retail, grocery, or similarly complex organization preferred
- HIPAA certification or willingness to obtain certification is preferred.
- Knowledge of IFRS is a plus
Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, PivotTables, IF statements, and SUMIF/SUMIFS formulas
- Ability to analyze and reconcile large and complex data sets
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to identify discrepancies, determine root causes, and implement appropriate resolutions
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate and complete work
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Experience with Oracle Fusion, PBCS Budget and Planning, payroll systems, human resources information systems, or benefit administration platforms preferred
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision and collaboratively across departments
- Ability to handle employee, payroll, benefit, and financial information with confidentiality and discretion
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, benefit documents, payroll records, accounting policies, procedures, and regulatory information. Ability to communicate financial information, discrepancies, and recommendations effectively to internal stakeholders, external vendors, and auditors.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate, analyze, and reconcile benefit expenses, payroll deductions, employer contributions, accruals, prepaid expenses, liabilities, allocations, and other financial activity.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to identify accounting discrepancies, analyze financial information, evaluate alternative solutions, and resolve issues while maintaining compliance with accounting policies, internal controls, and reporting requirements.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
