Full Job Description

OVERVIEW OF POSITION:

The Housing Specialist reports to the Director of Social Services and plays a pivotal role in ensuring that clients obtain permanent housing within acceptable timeframes, which results in the program’s success in meeting its housing placement targets. The Housing Specialist will also be responsible for conducting a housing assessment to determine the client’s housing readiness, family composition and other housing needs. S/he will assist clients in the completion of applications for housing and rental subsidy programs and conduct housing counseling. S/he will escort clients to subsidized housing, realtors, landlord, and community- based agencies. S/he will accompany clients on their apartment search and lease signings. S/he will establish linkages with real estate brokers and landlords, utilize media resources such as the internet to identify available apartments. S/he will maintain detailed participant notes and update the database (s) as necessary.

DUTIES:

•Coordinate, develop, and maintain linkages with landlords, brokers, and other housing resources.

•Develop a housing plan and coordinate a move based on the client’s transition plan from the shelter to affordable, permanent housing within the desired time frame.

•Develop and facilitate housing readiness workshops including mock interviews and working with clients to improve independent living skills.

•Function as a housing resource for clients and Social Service staff by maintaining an updated database of resources.

•Meet with clients bi-weekly to ensure housing readiness.

•Ensure case files are updated regarding housing search activities by accurately documenting client’s efforts and following up on any housing rejections.

•Accompany clients to housing appointments, as necessary.

•Serve as a liaison between DHS, Section 8, NYCHA, and other Housing Resources and Social Service staff to ensure that all necessary documentation is obtained.

•Advocate on participants behalf to obtain and or maintain housing subsidies.

•Identify entitlements and assist clients with benefit and housing applications.

•Performs other duties as assigned by the Facility Director or designee.

NECESSARY SKILLS:

•Experience providing housing services plan for at risk populations.

•Familiarity with community resources.

•Must have existing housing agents/realtor database of contacts.

•Understanding of challenges facing homeless/at-risk populations.

•Consistently maintain required paperwork.

•Ability to establish and maintain trusting relationships (having patience & perseverance).

•Ability to develop and maintain appropriate boundaries.

•Must demonstrate sensitivity to needs of clients in crisis.

QUALIFICATIONS:

•High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Some college preferred.

•Minimum six months to one year of comparable housing or real estate experience working with diverse at-risk populations.

•Strong communication and networking skills with landlords, brokers, and other community housing resources.

•Familiarity with CARES, a plus.

•Bi-Lingual (Spanish), preferred.
