The Materials Testing Laboratory provides technical support regarding the design, use, application, and research associated with construction materials.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to received three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
The purpose of the position is to supervise the NMDOT Soils Testing Unit. This position oversees and involves performing materials sampling, testing and troubleshooting to ensure specification requirements are in compliance within the State and Federal standards through observation of construction materials used in highway projects.
How does it get done?
The primary responsibilities of this position will include:
- Overseeing and performing materials sampling and testing for use in the design and construction of
roadway projects.
- Ensuring specification requirements are in compliance with State and Federal standards.
- Ensuring accuracy of test results and reports used by designers during the project design phase.
- Managing equipment to include American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials
(AASHTO) resource accreditation activities.
- Entering sample data into database system for logging and tracking.
- Supervising two engineering technicians.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and nine (9) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment. In-state and out-of-state travel may be required.
Business reference checks and driver's license verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results.
Must possess a TTCP Aggregate and Soils Certification at the time of interview.
Requires Technical Training
Certification Program (TTCP) certification in Concrete Testing within one year of hire. May require Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Aggregate and Soils field and lab testing, and/or ACI (American Concrete Institute) certification.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in a laboratory setting with exposure to dust, loud noises, and confined spaces and standing for long periods of time; in addition to work out in the field, in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow. May include exposure to: sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/ rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/ chemical and/ or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, high speed/ high volume traffic and loud noises, and confined spaces; falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distance. Hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; come climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to life up to 50 pounds.Work may also be preformed in an office setting with exposure to visual/ Video Display Terminal (DVT).
