Work Type/Travel: This position requires in-person attendance; remote work is not an option. Relocation is required prior to start date. May require travel or assignment to other clinic sites.
Salary Range: $80,000 - 95,000
Position Overview
Reporting to the CFO, the Controller oversees financial operations, supervises accounting staff, and ensures compliance with GAAP, grant requirements, and regulatory standards. The Controller plays a key role in delivering accurate financial reporting and supporting strategic decision-making across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Delivering financial insights to management through account analysis and preparation of accrual-based financial statements, including budget comparisons and performance metrics.
- Overseeing monthly budget reporting and supporting department leaders in expense planning and variance analysis.
- Managing month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Conducting cost analyses and identifying financial trends and variances.
- Collaborating with department managers on strategic and operational planning to meet program objectives.
- Administering vendor/service provider contracts to ensure timely renewals, accurate invoicing, and compliance with deliverables.
- Ensuring robust compliance processes are in place and proactively identifying risks or shortfalls.
- Supervising the preparation and review of balance sheet accounts and bank reconciliations.
- Driving process improvements to enhance financial efficiency and accuracy.
- Leading the development of organization-wide and departmental budgets and financial forecasts.
- Implementing cost controls across clinics and departments in coordination with leadership.
- Maintaining the chart of accounts and general ledger, ensuring consistency and integrity.
- Compiling and analyzing financial data using fund accounting systems, EMRs, and reporting tools.
- Verifying the accuracy of financial reporting data and conducting quality control checks.
- Managing cash receipt processes and general ledger postings.
- Coordinating the annual audit process and preparing documentation for the Audit Committee and Board of Directors.
- Supporting the preparation of the Medicare Cost Report and IRS Form 990.
- Supervising payroll operations and managing payroll-related functions.
- Authorizing procurement processes in compliance with funding contracts, policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in finance or accounting with a minimum of ten (10) years of job-related experience.
- Recent healthcare or non-profit accounting experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and cost accounting principles.
- Maintains current knowledge of policies and requirements relating to the financial management of Federally Qualified Health Centers.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by participating in continuing education or seminars related to job responsibilities.
- Maintains positive and accountable working relationships with all LFMC staff, vendors, and suppliers.
- Supervising staff in alignment with LFMC policies, workplace laws, and leadership expectations.
- Collaborating across departments to support organizational goals and foster a positive work environment.
- Leading employees to meet performance and continuous quality improvement standards.
- Providing effective feedback, recognition, and corrective action with support from Human Resources.
- Directly supervising the Senior Accountant, Accounts Payable Specialist, and Payroll Specialist.
- Communicating organizational updates through department meetings, one-on-one check-ins, and regular interpersonal communication.
- Ensuring staff are informed of policy and procedure changes and comply with all relevant laws and regulations.
- Completing LFMC training and staying informed of compliance and legal expectations affecting the department.
- Ability to prioritize work assignments and a willingness to work the hours necessary to meet established deadlines.
- Proficiency in using financial and business computer applications, specifically Microsoft Excel and MIP accounting software.
- Ability to interpret complex financial data and government regulations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft reports, policies, and correspondence.
- Highly detail-oriented with a strong emphasis on accuracy and presentation of financial work products.
- Capable of multitasking, meeting deadlines, and working independently or under supervision.
